.December 16, 2007 -- Celebrated author Mark Steyn has been summoned to appear before two Canadian judicial panels on charges linked to his book “America Alone."
The book, a No. 1 bestseller in Canada, argues that Western nations are succumbing to an Islamist imperialist threat. The fact that charges based on it are proceeding apace proves his point.
Five muslim students complained to Canada's human rights commission.
Indeed, this whole process of dragging Steyn and the magazine before two separate human-rights bodies for the “crime" of expressing an opinion is a good illustration of precisely what he was talking about.
If Maclean's, Canada's top-selling magazine, is found “guilty," it could face financial or other penalties. And the affair could have a devastating impact on opinion journalism in Canada generally.
As it happens, Canadian human-rights commissions have already come down hard on those whose writings they dislike, like critics of gay rights.
Nor should Americans dismiss this campaign against Steyn and Maclean's as merely another Canadian eccentricity. Speech cops in America, too, are forever attempting similar efforts - most visibly, on college campuses.
In fact, New York City itself has a human-rights panel that tries to stamp out anything deemed too politically incorrect.
Click on the link. This is one to read. This is whats in store for Christians who say homosexuality is wrong, or that Jesus is the only way to God.
This is where the hate crime laws are leading us to: A total censorship of conservative and Christian speech. If you don't believe me look north of the border where biblical passages printed on a pamphlet can put a person in jail.
Insulting islam can result in being hauled before a court. But the Golden Compass is just literature, right? Only Christians are insulted there.

"Steyn, who won the 2006 Eric Breindel Journalism Award (co-sponsored by The Post and its parent, News Corp), writes for dozens of publications on several continents. After the Canadian general-interest magazine Maclean's reprinted a chapter from the book, five Muslim law-school students, acting through the auspices of the Canadian Islamic Congress, demanded that the magazine be punished for spreading “hatred and contempt" for Muslims.
(Certainly seems to give the book credibilty ... threats ....using this childish "hate crime" nonsense.)
...

Since 9/11, Americans have been alert to the threat of terror from radical Islamists. But there's been all too little concern for a creeping accommodation of radical Islamist tenets, like curbs on critical opinions.
That needs to change.
Rational Muslims, you would THINK, or even FEEL should stand up against this Islamist THREAT - but NO - they want silence about this very real THREAT.
MrMannn you are RIGHT but will the sheeple figure it out in time?
I don't think so ... . Denial and fear of truth prevents that ... .

Yet another sign of the times. At this rate, it will only be a short time before the Bible itself becomes a banned book in Western Democracies.

The students that brought the complaints forward likely aren't part of some global Muslim conspiracy, and are likely relatively well adapted to Canadian culture.

Basically, federally regulated industries are not allowed to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, etc. Mcleans counts as federally regulated, and it is therefore not allowed to discriminate negatively against Muslims.
Its pretty simple, really.
Additionally, it is perfectly legal to say "I believe gays/Muslims are going to hell if they do not accept Jesus" etc etc in Canada, but it is not legal to say, for example, "Gays are disease ridden child molesters who should be executed according to Biblical law" because;
1. The first part is generally not true.
2. Thats inciting hatred, and advocating genocide. That is illegal in Canada.

Deleted.
My response was one of irritation, not love.
I will only say that I believe this article is a call to prayer.

Yeah, sure, except for that "free speech" thing and being of the muslim mindset that they can dictate to the non-muslim world what they can and can't write about.

They will likely fail, but that's not the point. This will have a chilling effect on anyone who'd thought to write anything negative about Islam.

I don't think any of us should forget the lessons learned the hard way in Great Britain. It is the second generation, born and raised in the UK, that is proving to be more radical than the immigrant parent generation.

I seriously doubt being raised in Canada (or USA) helps calm the Islamic aspiration of Muslim youth.
(Edited to say: the link is not good. But there are plenty of articles about the radical second generation of British Muslims. Try google.)

The text of the complaint can be found at this url:

I think the list of grievances makes it plain that Mohammed Elmasry (President of the Canadian Islamic Congress) is angry with the facts that Mark Steyn presented and wishes merely to censor the truth of what is happening in Canada.
I don't believe the complaint has anything to do with discrimination whatsoever, but rather, with an attempt by radical Muslims and secular progressives to squash opinion and lthe egitimate warnings Mark Steyn has issued against what we all know is happening across the Western world.
Complaints were submitted to Human Rights Commissions in B.C. and Ontario on the grounds that "the article subjects Canadian Muslims to hatred and contempt," according to a CIC press release. In the release, the CIC labels Steyn's article as "flagrantly Islamophobic."

Section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of the press. I have no doubt that if this case has to progress to the appeals courts it will be thrown out on that basis.
