View Full Version : The emergent church and your local christian book store

I was at our local christian bookstore this past weekend.
My eye caught some good looking books that where being displayed on a book shelf right behind that music section and mixed in with all the stuff the teens would be looking at.
So I wonder over there because the titles looked great and the covers where so cool looking. I thought maybe I could find something my daughter might like to read.
:runhills
It was all new agy, emergent church stuff. All wrapped up cool to appeal to the youth. And you really had to already be aware of the emergent church to even see that is what the book was selling. Otherwise, it all looks good.:tsk
It is scary, when the lines between truth and false hood get so blurred that even a christian bookstore is not really safe to take your teen into. :ohno

I have quit going to our local christian bookstore for this exact reason. I really could find no books that were not just "fluff" Christianity. So sad. I used to love to just go and browse. I just reread the stuff that I have that I know is sound.

This is a good thread.
I have gone to 2 non-SBC bookstores this week. (I won't give $ to SBC anymore BTW)
Upon entering the store, I am HIT with Contemplative, Emergent, WOF, false teaching!
It is an "Ecumenical Store"
I had to hunt for solid authors! :faint
I also have the habit of hiding the bad books by placing the good ones on top of this!:heh
(I pushed an Emergent Manifesto under the book rack:doh:ohno)

I thought I was the only one who did that. I have to order my books online now. I don't know of a single Christian bookstore that can be trusted anymore.
If I see a good book online, but I want to read it now, (without waiting for it to be shipped to me,) I will call the local Christian bookstores; but they NEVER have what I want and most of the time they can't even order it. The clerks seem to have never heard of the authors I'm interested in.:ohno

Sorry for the slow brain here, but can you give me examples of what constitutes "contemplative" and "emergent" so I'll recognize them? I know they are subtle and sneaky so I want to be on guard. I know how to identify WOF. Thanks!

There you will find some...
The following is from Apologetics Coordination Team a/k/a www.deceptioninthechurch.com
Master List Of Cult, New Age, Pro-Homosexual And Other Non-Christian Books Being Sold In Christian Bookstores
compiled by Bud Press, June 23, 2004
June 23, 2004
To the Reader: The following is a Master List of Heretical, Cultic, New Age Movement and Pro-Gay/Homosexual authors/books found advertised and promoted within numerous, major online Christian bookstores. While special care has been taken to provide current and accurate information, the reader is encouraged to check and verify the names prior to their removal.
While the "Pro-Gay/Homosexual" list contains authors who are homosexual, it does not mean that all of the authors are homosexual.
Certainly, this list is not confined to just online Christian bookstores. It may be applied to walk-in Christian bookstores as well.
For your convenience, the list is arranged in alphabetical order and in a single line. Information about the authors and books may be located by conducting a Google Search on the author's names, the "Description" section of your online bookstore or the websites provided in the list.
This Master List will be updated on a continual basis, and will be of great use to customers, employees, managers, owners and distributors of both walk-in and on-line Christian bookstores. Therefore, please use this list as the Lord leads.
Please note:
two Christian Booksellers Association Marketplace magazine articles on "Heresy" and "false doctrine" within online Christian bookstores are now online at www.erwm.com/CBA1.htm and www.erwm.com/CBA.htm
New Category: Centering/Contemplative Prayer. For a detailed analysis of this phenomenon, please refer to the book, A Time of Departing by Ray Yungen ( www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com ).
Special Note: While many of the authors have been removed from major online Christian bookstores, this Master List will remain intact for future reference.
This Master List is available online here and in Excel Spreadsheet/File (upon request).
Your comments and questions are welcomed. Until then, may the Lord bless you in your efforts to defend the faith, protect the flock and expose the unfruitful works of darkness (Jude 3; Acts 20:27-32; Ephesians 5:11).

I usually spend alot of money at Christian bookstores for Christmas presents, (many are for my own library, my husband asks me to just get what I want myself, I let him off the hook). And I have SEEN the emergent books all over the shelves. Joel Olsteen, Rick Warren etc etc etc, they could find VElvet Elvis, but they COULDN"T find Faith Undone in their inventories.
I bought myself a concordance, some blank journal books, some cd's for the kids and a few small bibles to give away.
I think its time for me to get my books from the authors themselves on the internet.
:rolleyes

This is so sad.
Henri Nouwen, I used to attend a Nazarene church, and he was an author read a lot. I never thought any of his stuff at that time was bad. But it has been over 6 years since I have even thought about him or his writings. Things really change. I hope they do not still read this author now. He wrote a lot of things for their workbooks and devotionals. All I can say now, is about the only thing we can trust is the Holy Spirit and what the bible says. The bible did say that the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth. It didnt say the "christian" authors would.

:aha
When I am at wal-mart and I see all the Joel Olsteen books, I turn them over and hide them under a pile of other stuff. It's a habit now :lol2
