Bible bashing dying out in Kansas

There is an American expression for something that is utterly obvious but not, for some reason, noticed.

"Hiding in plain sight", the Americans call it, and the expression came to my mind as I sat in Kansas City airport waiting for an ice storm to pass.

Hiding in plain sight in this state is a revolution in American Christendom, a change of heart that could see American Protestant churches looking increasingly like their European equivalents.

The state of Kansas gets a bad press. It is huge and empty and mostly flat.

In the summer it is uncomfortably hot and prone to tornadoes. In the winter it can be bitterly cold.

Its big cities are not very big and rather grey. It is not in the culinary avant garde.

In the airport cafe they have introduced nutritional advice next to their meals: the fresh strawberries are described as containing no trans-fats - which is a relief, I suppose - but only in Kansas could it be a surprise.

Kansas has also long been home to religious revivals and eccentric preachers, a few of them deeply wacky, to put it mildly.

Creationists, for instance, keep up a constant low-level guerrilla war in this state and, if that is insufficiently odd for you, try going to Topeka to see the Reverend Fred Phelps and his flock at the Westboro Baptist Church.

Well, glad they're coming to their senses.

Whoever wrote that article should have done his homework on the Phelps bunch. His "church" is made up of his family members, many who are attorneys, and the only reason they have not been shut down is because they know the legalspeak to manuver through the system.

In Kansas they are universally despised, by believers and non believers alike. It is obvious they are not behaving in a Christlike manner, and they are very offensive to the Gospel.

On the other hand, I am proud to be counted as a Bible toting Kansan!

i live in kansas too...
and i am thankful i live in a place as described in the article:

it is helpful to maintain a humble/appreciative state of being when we are not constantly tempted by flashy lights, beautiful decor, and pricey lifestyles....i'll take my flat, empty, grey, and tasteless kansas..

phelps does not represent our state...he needs intense prayer.

I read the whole article – it’s main point is that Christians seem to be drifting away from being concerned about things like abortion, homosexuality, etc, and instead are being more inclusive and focusing on issues like global warming,

Sure it talks about Phelps and such, but that’s not the main point of the article.

To me, it seems to come down to whether or not a given Christian believes Hell is real or not. If he or she thinks Hell is real, then those issues of abortion and homosexuality (as well as Christianity vs other religions) are important. If not, then focusing on this world becomes more important. What does everyone think about that change in priorities, if real?

The damage being done by many homosexual bisexual transgender activist like Rev Mel White's soulforce http://www.soulforce.org/index.php who talks about Phelps, on his site, are just as bad as Fred Phelps anger, there are more soulforces then Phelps..

You can't get grants for your church, from Arcus fund who supports soul force, if you don't verbally accept the homosexual bisexual transgenders agenda..John the Baptist and the Prophets of Israel, would be hated by this world, and when the Prophets of Israel show up again, the world despises them..
