best tip for buying a PS3: Don't.
The Xbox 360 has much better games, a much better online service, and it's cheaper. You can't go wrong.

If you have a large collection of PS2 games, you might want to see if you can find one of the discontinued 60Gb models. They're the last version that has the built in hardware support for PS2 games. The newer ones rely solely on software support, which may or may not cover your library. They keep updating though, so it's getting better.
The console itself is excellent, but they fell flat on their face with the price point and lack of games at release. Still, it's a nice system if you have the extra money for it. With a full 1080p output, they can keep the thing going for years, and the games list will hopefully keep growing.

With a full 1080p output...
The Xbox 360 does full 1080p over VGA and HDMI. All the newer ones have the HDMI port, as well.
I will say that the PS3 doesn't upconvert PS2 games, and to make matters worse PS2 games don't look as good on the PS3. Youtube doesn't lie. ...but at least you can play most of them on the 60 and 80 gig models. The Xbox 360 only has about 150 original Xbox games that work with it.

The 360 has a problem with breaking down to,It's called the red rings of death. It's when the lights around the power button turn red,it happens when your system fails. It's happened to me and thousands of other people.Microsoft even admitted that every sytem has a chance of braking down.If you get one keep it well venhilated so it doesn't over heat.360's get very very hot, there actually stronger than a household computer so they have a a lot of things running. But besides all that the 360 is an amazing console Microsoft just needs to fix the problem. They put to much power into a little box IMO

The PS3 constantly shuts off due to overheating, and that's from experience. As long as you keep either system away from other components and adequately cooled (3rd party fans, what have you) either one is fine.
Also, if something goes wrong with the PS3, sony doesn't cover it. The Xbox 360 has a three year warranty.

Microsoft has even been fixing boxes that are out of warranty. They fixed my nephews box after the warranty ran out and gave him another year of warranty on the repaired box. I know of hardcore gamers around here who carry them in to Game Stop and walk out with a new one without exchanging on cent. That tells me that at least Mr. Gates knows he has a problem and is at least trying to fix it.

They fixed mine also,I've also heard there putting in new cooling units because they said the reason for the breakdowns is from the system overheating.
