I'm about to lose my mind with my Lexmark 4200 series printer. :hehee After I have finished typing and am ready to print or whenever I attempt to print something from documents, it throws up this message, "Computer not communicating with printer." I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program six times. I've taken out all the cables and reinserted them. I've even taken the power plug out of the surge protector and placed it directly into the outlet per manual. Once in a while, voila! it works and then the next application I try, I get this mind boggling message. Is it the computer or me that's losing control here?:fear

Two things come to mind. Check where the printer cable plugs in and see if there is any damage on the printer or the computer plug. Or maybe buy a new printer cable. Sounds like a bad connection somewhere.

Thanks LoudRam, I'll do that. I live in a very small town. No computer stores for at least 35 miles. Do you think the WalMart electronic section would have what I need in new cables? :idunno

I think so. WalMart has most of the basic stuff for computers. If not Radio Shack should but it's going cost a little more than WalMart.
Try this... http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&search_query=printer+cable&ic=24_0&Continue.x=12&Continue.y=7

If not, go to your printer folder, right click on the printer, and set it as your default printer.

Thanks for the kind advice. My pc printer is defaulted to the Lexmark 4200 series. I was sure of that. All the little symbols even show up on my tray. What's really strange, I had shut the pc down for a little while, and then when I returned and turned it back on, without even prompting it or opening any programs, it says "printer is now printing" and out comes my documents. So, thinking it's all better, I typed up some more work, but when I attempted to run that application, it stated again " computer not communicating with the printer." :thinking I'm beginning to think my computer doesn't like me. Oh well, y'all have a really nice New Year and thank you so much for assisting me! Jean

Anyway, what application is it you are trying to run that this is happening with? Are you using Word and then using another application to print with?
BTW, by the time you probably answer, I'll be snoozin and it will be next year before I see your response (I could be wrong though),
Happy New Year

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU !!!!! Mathewteou. You all always beat US to it, don't you. I guess we'll never catch up with you.:aha
It doesn't seem to matter WHERE I print from --word pad or documents (I even unloaded almost everything in documents just in case the memory was jammed); the stupid old thing just doesn't want to play right. Thank you for continuing to try and help be, though.:wave

I've replaced the cable from printer to pc. It still does not compute. Does this sound like the printer or the pc? I can still use the printer to fax or make copies, photos, etc. but it's the communication from the pc to the printer that's on the blink. My data in the pc just won't translate. I don't know if the computer is more or less getting alzhiemers.
