1). The "Christians" left behind will probably quote the passages in Matthew saying the wicked (us religious "whackos") were taken away while the good enlightened people will still remain. The ignorant won't realize this actually refers to the sheep and goats judgment and not the rapture.

Hi, This is timely. I was just thinking about it this morning, a few seconds before I read this thread! I was wondering, if somone could explain this verse to me. How do you know it is referring to the sheep and goat judgement? (I am assuing the verse mentioned is the one about one taken and the other left.)Matthew 24:40 (New International Version)

Hi Jany!! Thank you for your reply:)

I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and this verse has always confused me.

I am not following how it relates to the judgement, tho. :scratch
What has always thrown my understanding off was the mention of people working, sleeping and then all o f a sudden one is taken and the other is not.
Kind of like the days of Noah.....people just doing their own thing. DOes this scenario follow along with the Judgement? :scratch

BUT, they that are taken are going to a place where vultures gather; That does sound like judgement! :thinking

Is there confusion about this verse in the church? Or is it only me??:idunno

Thank you btw, for any and all coments. I appreciate you all very much!

I would suggest that you look up some commentaries on this verse and see what the learned scholars of the past have to say.

I like your attitude.

If you want a really good and detailed study on Matt 24, I've included a few links below. Jack Kelley has a great 4 part commentary on it and it is easy to read. :thumb

Thank you very much! I am going to go to Blueletter Bible and search through those commentaries, and read the above suggested lessons by Jack Kelley. Lots of reading to do, so it may be a bit before I post what I have gleaned from all of this.

Thanks again, and Happy New Year!

Matthew 24

I am still confused. I am confused about my confusion, too :aha
I read Matthew Henry's commentary.

I always thought that the Rapture was spoken about in chapter somewhere, but I guess not. So this is all about the Judgement. I just have a hard time imagining people eating and drinking and marrying while the Great Tribulation is going on.

Maybe I do not have the correct time frame.....I mean, the GT happens before the judgement/ Second coming. How can people be doing these things, oblivious to the peril all around (famine, war, pestilence, antichrist, etc..) even if they are clueless as to what it all means.

Maybe if there were a time line or something that would lay it all out for me to see? Would anyone be able to direct me to a visual aid? Thanks~Anne

Well, after reading a few various opinions, what I thought would happen did. I' Apparently my question wasn't so simple.
Now I've gotten myself into terms like 'preterists, partial preterists, and futurists.
Blah blah, So, I am giving up any study right now and am just going to read my Bible.
From my research I have concluded that there is a teacher for every thought out there, and before I know it I am in the middle of a bunch of men who are so concerned with proving their point, that it seems like the message of Scritpure is thrown out the window. ( I am a little frustrated right now)

God will do what He has planned to do whether I understand it or not, so I am going to stop dwelling on all the unknowns right now. Matt Henry said it best, and of everything I have read this stood out head and shoulders above anything else: .. Christ here foretels the going forth of deceivers; he begins with a caution, Take heed that no man deceive you. They expected to be told when these things should be, to be let into that secret; but this caution is a check to their curiosity, "What is that to you? Mind you your duty, follow me, and be not seduced from following me.’’ Those that are most inquisitive concerning the secret things which belong not to them are most easily imposed upon by seducers, 2 Th. 2:3. The disciples, when they heard that the Jews, their most inveterate enemies, should be destroyed, might be in danger of falling into security; "Nay,’’ saith Christ, "you are more exposed other ways.’’ Seducers are more dangerous enemies to the church than persecutors.

Well, I do feel a little better, after getting that out. Thanks for listening.
God Bless,
Anne

Sealed, it can't refer to the Rapture (IMHO) because 50 pct of folks don't go in the rapture <><

Yes. If you look at verse 3 in chapter 24, Jesus is being asked about the end of the age. In Matthew 13, Jesus told them there will be 2 separation judgments at the end of the age. One is of good/bad Jews (Wheat/Tares). The other is of good/bad gentiles (dragnet of fish). Both will take place at the end of the age. Both separations are done by angels.

In the verses surrounding Matthew 24:40, Jesus is describing how these separation judgments will work. Those who are bad (have no faith) will be taken away in physical death, just like those in the Flood. The good will remain alive to enter the Millennial Kingdom.

The parable of the 10 virgins at the start of Matthew 25 is also a kingdom of heaven parable, meaning it also refers to the end of the age just prior to the start of the Millennial Kingdom. It is another explanation of the Wheat/Tares separation judgment. Those who have kept their faith (oil) will enter into the Wedding Feast. Faith is the oil Jesus told the Jews He would be looking for when He returns:

Luke 18:8. "I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?"

The sheep/goat separation later in Matthew 25 is about the judgment Jesus will execute over all the nations during His Millennial Reign on David's Throne. It does not occur in this present age.
