People can't drive cars safely with their cell phones, imagine them trying to fly a mini-helicopter. I agree, it would be a bloodbath of crashes but it sure would be cool to have one.

I am a science teacher and was talking about this with my physics class recently. We were talking about how different the landscape would be if all vehicles flew. I know this is "what if" talk, but it was fun. We talked about how different the landscape would look without roads. There would be a lot more green areas. Even cities would not be in "blocks". Roads would not have to connect making the typical city block. Also, small towns would be more accessible because we would not have to go down "winding roads" to get there. Personally, I would miss driving down winding roads and I don't know if I would want my small town so accessible.

When crashes and accidents in the air happen, unless they somehow make the cars unable to be effected by gravity, I can see tons of casualities happening on the ground because of this:rolleyes. BAD IDEA:ohno. Can you imagine how many birds will be hit:idunno. Would kite flying now be banned because it would intefer with traffic:idunno? Wouldn't people in 10 story (or higher) apartment buildings be at risk if a crash happened outside their apartment and the cars came tumbling in:idunno? Gee, talk about a great potential for a suicide bomber....they would have to fly a plane, just jump in a car and drive into the middle level of the Hancock building:ohno. And lets not forget the litter bugs...a half full can of pop or a bottle dropped out of a car window from 70 feet up could kill if not maime someone.

Flying cars like we see in the "Fifth Element" or "Star Wars" need advanced computer control before the public gets them.
-->This will still need a pilots license to operate.
For the public we won't see this sort of stuff for 20 years at least. Computers need automatic collision avoidance, autopilots, auto mapping...all of this requires an intelligent computer control.
By the time we can afford to buy flying cars, we will already be able to tell our cars to, "Go home." and catch a snooze during the commute.
Believe me, I'm a sci-fi nut...I know these things.

I'm more concerned with how this highway in the sky would affect us "earthlings." I doubt seriously if I'd be logging in any air miles. I've got a dreadful fear of heights. It's the realization that if we had as many wrecks in the sky as we do on the land, we wouldn't have to worry about armeggedon; there would be so many missiles falling from the air in the form of debris and bodies we wouldn't need:pray any other disaster to finish us off.
