SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A fierce arctic storm lashed the California coast Friday, threatening to paralyze the mountains with deep snow and bring devastating rain to a coastal landscape already charred by wildfires.

The northern half of the state was being hit with strong rain, 85-mph wind and heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada, National Weather Service forecaster Andrew Rorke said.

In Southern California, the storm was gathering strength off the coast and was expected to strike the region by mid-afternoon, Rorke said.

"We're watching it really blossom on satellite," he said.

Homeowners rushed to stack sandbags around houses lying below fire-ravaged hillsides in Southern California, while Northern California residents — like those along the Gulf Coast before a hurricane — scurried to stock up on last-minute provisions. Forecasters warned the high wind and other extreme weather would last through the weekend.

In the eastern Sierra ski town of Mammoth Lakes, resident Barbara Sholle went to the supermarket after receiving a call from the town's reverse-911 system. She waited an hour to pay for her groceries amid a crush of residents.

The storm system began dumping rain and snow Thursday in parts of Northern California. Power outages, damaged electrical lines and downed trees were reported in the Sacramento area by nightfall.

The U.S. Forest Service issued an avalanche warning for Mount Shasta, in the Cascade Range in far Northern California, while the National Weather Service issued a rare blizzard advisory for the Sierra Nevada.

The storm system brought high wind warnings along the coast. Ocean tides were expected to swell to 30 feet, leading the Coast Guard to caution boaters to remain in port.

"If you don't have to go out this weekend, it might be a nice weekend to stay at home after the holidays," said Frank McCarton, chief deputy director of the California Office of Emergency Services.

A rare blizzard warning for the mountains and Lake Tahoe region remained in effect until Saturday morning, and chains or snow tires were required on all vehicles in mountain passes. Forecasters said several feet of snow was expected, along with winds gusting to 150 mph and zero visibility.

"It's been several years since we've seen a storm this impressive," said Chris Jordan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno, Nev.

Yeah, the winds are howling where I live in Northern California. Seems like a good day to stay inside and play computer games. It doesn't seem like a storm of apocalyptic magnitude however. I wonder if it is hitting Southern California worse?

Sitting here waiting for it, not a drop of rain yet. I'm in Southern California, but I'm headed to our local mountains on Tuesday. I'm sooooooo hoping for snow. We're taking our entire 6th grade (about 150 students) to science camp! Their all inner city dwellers... many have never been to the mountains, let alone seen any snow. :yeah Come on snow!! :yeah

SoCA has seen horrible winds since the 22nd, it's been awful. We do get a reprieve here and there though, yesterday was nice enough I could rake my garden and yard...LOL I've been waiting for the storm to hit though, the weather had said rain Thur-Sat and haven't seen it yet. It does look like it's coming though and the arthritis says get it over with already. ;)

The weather here is horrible. Very rainy & windy. The wind is more a concern for me. But we always have at least one bad storm every year. I'm glad it waited til after people were done traveling for the holidays.

Hope everyone stays safe.

Yikes! I lived in Lake Tahoe for 25 years. It was always very harsh in the winter. They thought this year would be a dry one, but looks like this storm is bad.

Wow. I'm on the extreme coast and it's just been breezy but nothing major. Glad you got out in your garden yesterday! I've been wanting to plant some more geraniums but I think I'll wait for the rain to come and go.

The winds here north of you were gusting over 60mph the 23rd to 26th, it was awful, I went out of town then for a few days after that and it was calm down my Knott's, but windy still when I got home. I hate the wind too, it makes me cranky. LOL

I am wanting to plant some pansies myself, they are my favorite. Usually I plant them in spring and continually have to replace them in the summer because they die, it was only a few years ago I learned they are not "meant" for summer gardens :doh

Have a great trip to the mnts!!!!! 150 sixth graders?! :faint

I think it is Arnold's fault with his ridiculous liberal godless policies. Seriously, God can not be happy with the direction of California. I feel badly for the believers living there to be subjected to such nonsense. My son lived near Occidental for one year and loves Cali (outdoor enthusiast)and may head back but I am hoping not. I am sure the Lord will protect his children.

A side note WVBORN56...

[29] No Speculations on the Causes of Natural Disasters onto people or cities as being Judgments from God - We are still living in the Age of Grace. God deals with individuals on a personal salvation basis and speculations of natural disasters and the timings of isolated or random natural disasters upon others due to political, economic, or religious actions taken by governments, societies, or individuals does not warrant a direct judgment from God. God will begin His direct judgments upon the nations again after the Rapture. Luke 13:2-5 II Peter 3:7-13
