Grandfather accuses officials of discriminating against heterosexuals

A school district following Maine's Human Rights Law and providing special accommodations to a 10-year-old with "sexual orientation or gender identification" issues is being accused of discrimination by a man whose grandson is being denied those same accommodations because of his sexual orientation – that of heterosexuality.

The dispute at Asa C. Adams Elementary School in Orono has the school committee on the defense, the grandfather on the march, and the local Bangor News newspaper trying to set rules for "Christian" behavior for the community.

At the heart of the issue is the treatment being provided an unidentified 10-year-old at the elementary school, according to documentation from the Christian Civic League of Maine.

The organization is reporting Paul Melanson found out his grandson's school was allowing another boy to use the girl's restroom, and decided that wasn't right. He told his grandson to follow the other boy into the girl's restroom whenever he saw the other boy doing it, and when he did, the boy was confronted by school officials and warned against such behavior, and the grandfather was confronted by police.

However, Melanson responded to those concerns by alleging the school was discriminating against his grandson by depriving him of the accommodations allowed others, simply because of his sexual orientation, an action banned under state law.

How screwed up is our society anyway? This nonsense is just beyond evil IMO.

Go grandpa! Go! While I don't agree with thumbing your nose at the rules, I have to applaud grandpa for his stance.

Too bad the kid was caught in the middle...this was a shame. There are other ways to protest. You don't have to use a 10 year old to do it. :ohno

Insane how schools (educators) are the first to do idiot things like this. :rolleyes

I think we have as many screwy liberals in the education community as we do in hollywood.

It stilll amazes me how they can throw common sense into the trash bin and give a boy permission to use the women's restroom! Who cares what their reason is - you can't start reversing the way society operates.

Mr Spock (the Vulcan) would have an aneurism over such illogical thinking.

guess they should change the signs on the bathroom doors to...to be delicate...."Those with" and "Those without"? What a sick world we live in, pray for our young people, there seems to be no black and white in their world, everything is gray.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum (or, in this case, the school)!

This is really discrimination against girls who apparently now have to take care of business with boys present. Those who have been taught any modesty are going to have trouble with this. School restrooms don't always have doors on the stalls. My school always had some doors missing. Why aren't the parents of girls standing against this? I wouldn't want my little girl having to put up with this.

i agree 100% - you would think that those parents of the girls would be the first ones to step up and say "excuse me, i don't want my little girl doing her business with a boy in the next stall" Like the article said, anyone can claim to have "gender identity issues" (which imho, doesn't really exist, but beside the point). so basically this rule makes it ok for any boy to just say, "yeah i want to use the girls bathroom instead" with no real valid reason whatsoever except to get a look at a girl's "goodies".

I never thought i could be the type of mom to do homeschooling, but everyday that i hear about what's going on in our schools, i'm giving it a second thought.... if only i didn't have to work in order to keep those bills paid.
