The Goal
Empower Teen Girls To Quite Literally Fight Back Against Sexual Assault and Abduction
The Vision
"A world where a girl can go to the mall - without fear; A world where a girl can go to a party - without risk; and A world where a girl can just walk home - without dying; that's the world I see and that's the world we're creating with Just Yell Fire."
- Dallas Jessup, 15 black belt, founder, and spokesperson for Just Yell Fire
The Problem
Predators try to abduct about 100,000 teenage girls each year, one in four college girls will be date-raped before they leave school, and there has been nothing out there to teach these kids how to fight back and get away. The police can't be everywhere, nor can parents, but girls 11 to 19 are still facing the risk of assault, abduction, and death. It is this problem, for these girls, that Just Yell Fire is solving.
Our Solution
We teach teen girls it is okay to fight back and how to do just that. Dallas Jessup, a 15 year old girl with a black belt, worked with her street fighting coach to develop 10 easy-to-learn techniques for a 100 pound girl to get away from an attacker - every time. With this information a teen girl can bite, gouge an eye, whipslap an ear, and otherwise avoid abduction, rape, and even death.
To spread the word and teach these get away strategies Dallas wrote a script and organized a professional crew of 30 volunteers who created a production length film, Just Yell Fire which demonstrates the 10 techniques, shares a Dating Bill of Rights, and includes stay-safe strategies from law enforcement agencies. Josh Holloway and Evangeline Lilly, stars of television's LOST, also volunteered and appear in the film.
Dallas continues a national media and speaking tour to spread the Just Yell Fire message, while together with co-star Matt Wadzita, speaks at schools, camps, at-risk student programs, and regional teen and women's safety conferences throughout the United States.
The film is Free to view online and we give away DVDs to any teen girl without Internet access.
The Results
Hundreds of thousands of teen girls have seen the film (for Free) Just Yell Fire, since it went online in October, 2006. Over 300,000 free DVDs have been given out, mailed, or downloaded. In the time it takes to see the film, the girls learn the easy techniques. They are now more protected from almost any rape or abduction situation.
Letters and emails arrive numbering from 20 to 900 a day lauding the Just Yell Fire program, from 37 countries on 6 continents. Schools, police agencies, libraries, shelters, and other agencies in these many countries now show the Just Yell Fire film to keep their teen girls safe.
The Title
The first get-away strategy for teens is to first and always yell "FIRE"! The reason for "Fire" is when a teen yells "Help" most people think they are playing and do nothing; when a teen yells "Rape" most people are fearful or complacent and do nothing. Yelling "Fire" immediately captures everyone's self interest and they rush to see what is happening. Attention is the last thing predators want, and often this alone will stop an abduction
