MY son downloaded something and fried my ports. usb . Is there anything I can do to bring them back up? I took it to best buy (my laptop) and they said it would cost $200 or more to fix it.

Any advice out there that I can do something to bring even one back on myself? thanks

Have you tried doing a 'system restore'? Either going back to a previous time or reloading your system?

Yes, I did a system restore from the disc that came with the computer. It didnt change anything. I dont think I can go back to a previous time now, since I did the sys restore -- can I? I didnt think that would work, Im also not puter savy, in the operation system sense, so Im kinda scared of messing anything up that way.

Thanks for your answer.

When you did the system restore from the disk, did it reinstall the drivers or just the OS? You might have to go to C: and look for a directory like "swsetup" and install from there. There is also the possibility there is a folder under "Start->All Programs" that has additional software that needs to be run/installed.

BTW, what brand of laptop is it?

What did he download?
Ports might just be blocked
Fried means burnt out and you need new parts
Not sure if software could do that, an electric surge could cause it. :idunno

USB ports might be disabled in the BIOS, or something bad is starting up with the computer
Could be you just need a USB driver

You could get a PCMCIA USB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839101111) card for the laptop

you guys are wonderful, but you are talking to someone who is computer deficited in the operations part. I wish I knew what some of these things were.

My laptop is toshiba, I called them, but they want to charge for help. So I went to Best Buy and they said they were not working (all the usb ports), and that they would have to send t to California for approx 200.00.

He downloaded some music thing to go with a telephone? I dont know, but he said he knew he did something wrong at the time of download.

I took it to another place for a second opinion, and they said also that the usb ports dont work. !!

Im so upset cos now I cant use my mouse.

Wish I could have one of puter smart guys to come over.

:)
Keep looking up!
