When did software get annoying? There was a time when a new release of a popular program was so exciting and useful that we couldn't wait to try it out. Now, some software seems like it's deliberately designed to irritate you, with everything from persistent update and registration requests to sunset policies that cripple perfectly good applications. Marketers have taken over product design, and the products are the worse for it.

I talked to other editors here at PC World to compile this list of some of the most irritating developments in software. Let's hope the software publishers out there are listening.

Annoying software? Windows Vista. Would have to throw away my perfectly good NEC laser printer because will not work with Vista. Printer too old to do new driver.

Yeah, I tend to go with "1. The Antipiracy Inquisition".

Case in point: I like a program named XSI by softimage. It's a pretty good modelling application that is starting to be accepted by many multimedia development studios. However, to use the software you must have XP Pro. The reason for that being there is some scheme in XP Pro that is used for authorization of the software, but other versions of XP do not have this, such as the Home version doesn't which is the more common version out there.

What really does it for me, even though they took this course in hopes of stopping the pirating of their application, it still got cracked and pirated. So, in the end, a lot of people that potentially would be willing to pay the $1k for the entry level version of the application, were unable to try the demo version or the free PLE version (for non-commercial use) while the general population of people that use pirated software were able to get it... probably on their pirated version of XP Pro nonetheless.
