Start iMovie.
Below the big viewer screen, you'll find a "switch" that has scissors on one side and a camera on the other. Switch it to the camera.
Hook up your camera to your computer with the Firewire cable.
Rewind camera to the point you would like to start importing.
Turn the camera to an import mode, on my camera it's "play" mode (not the mode where you can record, if this makes sense)
Wait for iMovie to recognize your camera.. it may take a few seconds.
Click Import in the iMovie viewer once it turns from light gray to a functional button. You'll see your video camera start playing, and you'll see your video start to show up in the smaller "clip pane". iMovie will automatically stop importing when it doesn't detect any DV signal.
I taught a 2-day workshop on iMovie earlier this month. I used this little video at the iLife Tutorial section of the Apple site to get the class started. It may help you. Click where it says "Play video" to watch a video on what I described above.

There's a video for every step of using iMovie. It's a tremendously helpful site. :)
