On the local news in Toledo, Ohio ..... 230 folks laid off from a machining plant because of Chrysler shutting down 3rd shift across the country which includes, next week, the Jeep plant in Toledo ... 750 jobs there will be gone. Jan. 23 I think it is. I'm glad that President Bush said that the economy is sound and robust; it will make those folks feel better ...

p.s. Oh ... did I mention the GM Power Train Plant in Toledo, a few weeks ago, announced massive lay offs? Oh ya ... the Chrysler transmission plant in Perrysburg next to Toledo too. It will be sad for a lot of people if the economy is ever not sound and robust ... Oh, and the Ford Stamping Plant in Maumee that was set to shut down in 2009 was shut down this past Fall. Extraneous businesses that support these plants? Many are not just slowing down but actually closing the doors. The good news though is that the economy is sound and robust ...

I remember this lyric from many years ago ...

I used to like to go to work but they shut it down

I got a right to go to work but theres no work here to be found

Yes and they say were gonna have to pay whats owed

Were gonna have to reap from some seed thats been sowed

well, there are many jobs with American corporations in India and China, etc.,,,,,,we just need to move there............I live in Detroit area,,,,so quiet and such a strange quietness in the air,,,,,,,,,,,so many homes in foreclosure in my 'hood, the banks do not put signs on them, for fear of freaking people out with the signs.....
But, to listen to the news, we have a "strong" economy,,,,inflation is cited at way-low (yeah, right) numbers,,,and unemployment is low.....
These are government-fudged numbers that do not reflect what is really going on.........
My son higher-up in GM, says we are going into a massive depression...................

yeah that whole Toledo, Detroit area is sruggling right now.
My husband works in the robotics industry and so has alot of
different contacts in various manufacturing facilities.
He was amazed at how the financial books would show that it was cheaper
to manufacture in China or mexico because of the labor costs, but somehow the shipping etc of stuff back and forth went on a different budget, therefore a different book so it didn't work into the cost vs. savings. Or the cost of sending people there to fix stuff, or train the workers etc. It's amazing how things get justified with "creative accounting". But at the same time, many of the unions have also made it very difficult for companies to work here in the US as well..... so maybe in some cases it was cheaper and easier to send work across the borders even with the other costs worked in...:idunno

I keep praying for ya man. I have lots of family there, and we're in the Detroit area ourselves, with lots of hubby's family here.

Japan is pulling manufacturing back from China because they don't want the Chinese to get the manufacturing secrets.

One of the biggest problems of manufacturing overseas is that it increases the design to manufacturing time because of the back-and-forth between the plant and the designers back in the US. When I was in on that, the manufacturing engineer for our product was down the street. That made it very, very quick to turn around problems.

You can't determine the entire economic picture by using incidents. You have to back up and look at data.

And, a part of recessions is public perception. If you have a lot of people believing that things are getting horrible and they start heading for the exits, things are going to get worse and more people will lose jobs. If Bush stated that things are bad and getting worse, it would happen much deeper and much quicker and last longer.

Been there. Still recovering. I got laid off 4 times since 9/11. I'm now working 2 jobs still trying to dig us out of that craziness. We're still going month to month to make house payments. It's hell.

Actually, the Chrysler thing is across all of North America, not just Toledo. Much industry in all parts of America are involved in the automotive industry. When auto sales go down, folks around the whole nation are affected. But, as we already know, many industries are down right now. Etch-a-sketch used to be here in NW Ohio also until they moved the whole company to China about 4-5 years ago. Philips had a CRT factory here too but they moved it to Mexico. :idunno
