During Luther's time this very thing was happening. Priests were telling parishioners that by giving money to the priest, the priest, with his special spiritual endowments, would pray for the dead loved ones the parishioner and have their purgatory time commuted. Of course, the money had to be paid.
Of all the crazy things that were happening during Martin Luther's time, I do believe that this was the proverbial last straw that caused him to reflect upon the Word itself outside of the existing church structure, and to eventually separate from the catholic church.

Did you watch the other videos of the debate? The one titled "Who is this blessed man?" was good too.
