My 16 year old son Raymond:

He was playing a video game for 2 weeks straight trying to beat it and finish. It was all he had been doing, and was right on with it every chance he got.

then I heard him in there throwing a fit! I walked in there to find him hitting the disk with a screwdriver, a hammer, and trying to tear it apart!:shocked I asked him what in the world are you doing???! He said, "momma--this game is not worth throwing in the trash whole. :tsk it asked me to pray to a god. it wanted me to bow and worship a god..... Im going to go outside and burn this thing!" strangely, I was proud of him for this. :hug

I dont know, some parents may have taken this differently---but for me, I was proud that he was angry with this game. (even though it cost me a pretty penny) I was glad that he took such offense and did what he did.

Alot of kids would have finished it out and said, "oh well-its just a game." But think about it, really.

I took it as a victory. :thumbup

Praise God that your son could recognize this! :yay

We have all but took our 12 year old's video system away. We are going to let him have it back some this summer but will snatch it back if we see some of what we have seen before (no drive to do anything but play). I will not allow my youngest son (7) to play video games and will never buy him one. I wish I had not with the oldest.

It's good to recognize things but I believe that playing a character in a video game is no different than if you were an actor playing a part. If you aren't truly worshipping something it's not serious.

KingdomCome, while I'm not certain, there is no difference. It's akin to having that very same actor in your analogy blaspheme and deny God. A Christian wouldn't take part in it unless it glorifies God! And why should they? If your character in a game is the Hero, then obviously allowing that Hero to be shown to worship other demi-gods has an influence on minds not able to discern and souls unprepared for a struggle.

I feel the game industry should be outlawed. Every DVD they write is stamped with the devil's seal of approval without question! Video games ruin lives of all those involved - like this new WoW phemonemon - People will quit their jobs to play a fantasy character! People do not glorify God in that game since you basically play as Wiccans and "Shamans" of different faiths and then your "faith" takes on a real role in the believers mind.

Ok Cliff's Notes for those who don't like long-windedness: Video games are not reality, but they can influence a person to alter their behaviour in such a way that it is not glorifying to God.

I think if your son stuck to games like Madden or NCAA Football or "The Big Show MLB" (baseball) and that kind of stuff he probably would never encounter demonic gods and pagan worship.

I think the closest I've come to seeing Evil in NCAA football is when I see the Syracuse or Boston College team, both of which are pure, unadulterated college football evil. Good thing I always beat them though. :)

And while I recommend the sports games, you may want to avoid NHL video games, because you will find both Satan AND Devils in that game, and both are openly promoted. :heh

But you aren't. The on screen character is, it's not you personally. And I wouldn't suggest using blasphemy as in the words that come out of your mouth BUT if you are an actor and you play a Christian in a movie does that make you a christian? No. But I personally would not want to take part in such a thing but if it happened in a game I was playing I might shut it off but I doubt I would leap from my chair and start hacking at it.

Sounds like book burning. There are games that deal with playing cards, puzzles, chess, sports and all sorts of topics yet you want it ALL outlawed? I'm sorry but this kind of statement is what makes Christians look like we're crazed. Tell people you find it wrong but saying we should outlaw it makes us look bad.

I'm very hurt by your last few statements, which seem to imply that I'm crazy for my disdain of the gaming industry.

So to prove I'm not crazy look at it this way: RockStar games include Grand Theft Auto - very violent, very perverse. They also make a Table Tennis game which is neither perverse or violent. The issue I take with it is that it comes from the same company which produces the smut.

Ok so maybe not ALL of the games are bad, but you have to consider the source. If you support a company which produces an evil game by buying a good game, you're allowing and enabling them to go on producing the evil. Just as Christians we should be wary of this, that's all I really meant.
