I don't remember if i posted on here for this request before.. But i finally have the cash to purchase a text book for my 8th grader for science..

What would you recommend? I am at a loss... He has always taken a hands on science class with the Homeschool center -- but they are not offered anymore.. I have been thinking he needs a text or something good to start doing science at home..

I am thinking a 7th/8th grade text would be good as he has never had any formal science classes.. And something hopefully not to boring and definitely something directed away from secular science ie: evolution as a fact. :rolleyes

Thanks in advance!!

Right mow my daughter is using exploration education and is in 6th grade. Next year however she will be using this program. https://apologia.securesites.net/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2 i have also heard nothing but good things about this program.

I second the Apologia curriculum. :thumb It's written to the student, and designed for the student to work independently without parental help. Apologia purposely wrote the curriculum that way for parents that are not science oriented. My daughter has used their Biology book and is now doing their Chemistry book and she really likes it.

On the site -- which did you order the book set for $75 OR the text only for $55??? It looks like they have solutions manual and a full course CD -- do i need those two as well?

Thanks for the heads' up on this curriculum -- it looks good!

pat, try to find it used first. You don't need the whole CD course, just the text, and the solutions manual. The manual has all the tests in it and the answers. Here's some links where you can find the materials used. Which one are wanting?

http://www.the-book-cover.com/ This store ships all over the world. My daughter works there.

http://vegsource.com/homeschool/ This is a homeschool swap site. These are not dealers, though some are, but most are other homeschoolers looking to sell or buy they used materials.

And of course there is e-bay, Amazon, and Abe Books. If you don't know about Abe Books, they are an online site where used book dealers list their wares, and is very reliable.

This is the one for 7th grade it looks like, it looks like a good one to start with, and then get the next one next year or when he finishes this one.. :thinking All kind of new to me, as i haven't really ever done a formal science with him, he has always taken a hands-on science class at the homeschool center..

Will check out the links.. :thumb

I'm sorry, I'm just now seeing this post. :doh Yes, I'm sure she likes it. She likes it because they make it very easy to understand. The only time she had a problem was when she first started doing their Chemistry, but she got some help, and now she absolutely loves Chemistry. It's her favorite subject. Your daughter will be fine. Apologia makes their material easy to understand, that even you can help her and not be confused. If you ever have a problem, you can call or email them with a question and they will help you.
