Paulson: Fast stimulus action needed
'Time is of the essence,' Treasury Secretary says as Congressional leaders and Bush prepare to meet on plan.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, confronted with global market turmoil, said Tuesday that Congress and the administration need to agree quickly on a package of tax cuts and other measures to boost the economy.

"Time is of the essence and the president stands ready to work on a bipartisan basis to enact economic growth legislation as soon as possible," Paulson said in remarks to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He spoke as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and leaders in both parties prepared to meet with President Bush at the White House to discuss a stimulus bill.

They cause the problem and then act like they can't imagine how it all happened and point fingers and pull their hair. Are there no people in government big enough to take responsibility for the mess this country is in?

Shouldn't "time is of the essence" be followed by, "or else"? Isn't the administrations plea for getting money out to the spending public ASAP an indication that something about this current situation is drastic?

Rebates to stimulate the US economy? Too bad most people will use these rebates to purchase products made in China or overseas. How much is this really going to help the US economy?? Not much I would think. Couple this with the lowering of interest rates that got us into this mess in the first place. Sounds like another recipe for diaster only with a different flavor!!

You are mistaken. It IS a stimulus package, just not an economic one. It's a VOTER stimulus, to make people think they are doing something and of course that "they care". :pound

this plan is an abomination. not only is it pathetically skewed for fraud incentives, anyone with an income over 75,000 does not get the rebate. those of us who make more than that are paying into a failure. good game

I am glad you all are seeing this whole thing as a big mistake too. So many people are just glad to get the money; I was beginning to feel like a kill joy or something.:thinking The way I look at it, if this economic stimulus package was supposed to be like some giant fibrillator for the dying economy, well then why didn't all the spending during Christmas give it a charge?:idunno Every body was spending money buying each other and their children gifts, you'd think that kind of spending would have jump started something. I'm afraid GW just has a bad habit of throwing good after bad.:scratch If the economy starts going down the drain, he just accelerates its demise.:doh
