The boys and I are currently wrapping up our Story Of The World. We were doing the first book. I would like to continue with either the next book or something similar to it. I so wish they had a lapbook with it.

Have any of you ladies done a middle ages study before with a 3rd or 4th grader? If so what did you use?

I want to have fun with this.

We are in the middle of the SOTW Book Two: Middle Ages.

I got several Usborne books about armor, castles ect. to make it more interesting. Here are some of the titles I used:
Usborne Beginners Armor by Catriona Clarke
Usborne Young Reading: The Adventures of King Arthur
Usborne Young Reading: The Story of Castles
Usborne First Stories: The Tournament (I got this mostly for my 6yo dd)
The True Princess ~ What makes someone a true princess in Jesus' eyes? by Angela Elwell Hunt (again mostly appeals to girls)
The Princess and the Kiss by Jennie Bishop ~ a story of God's gift of purity (appeals mostly to girls)
The Squire and the Scroll by Jennie Bishop ~ A tale of the rewards of a pure heart (appeals more to boys)
Joan of Arc by Josephine Poole
Robin Hood

I also got the History in Action Medieval Calstle (my kids play with this all the time! I got it for $13 at BJ's) http://silverdolphinbooks.com/catalog/details.asp?ISBN=1592236650

We painted shields made out of posterboard. This was a really good study of how they went about choosing design and color ect. We got alot of ideas from Coat of Arms by Catherine Daly-Weir. http://www.amazon.com/Coat-Arms-Catherine-Daly-Weir/dp/0448419750/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201288191&sr=1-1

I bought alot of cheap knights, horses, weapon toys from the craft store which the kids play with the History In Action Medieval Castle.

We took them to the Reinassance Fair in the fall. :thumb They didn't understand much at the time because we haden't studied it yet but now I can say "remember what you saw....?"

We also plan on taking them to the Medieval Times restaurant where you watch a joust while you eat. Expensive but my MIL gave us money for it. :yay

A good friend of mine built a castle out of huge cardboard tubes, big cardboard boxes and paint. She got several of her ds's friends in on the project and the really had a good time!

We took the kids to Medieval times some years ago. I wish we lived closer to one now.

A Renaissance Fair would be a blast.

We are going to take them to the Renaissance Fair again in the fall but this time go to Pennsylvania's. Their's is much better then MD's. :thumb They even have a human chess match which ds is very excited about. He wants to be a knight and doesn't understand why people from the audience can only be pawns. :lol2

I forgot to mention that we have been getting Graphic Universe books out of the library. Many of them are legends and myths from the middle ages. My ds can't get enough of them! :thumb He loved Beowulf so much that I went ahead and bought the book for him. The price was :yikes:reaction but if my reluctant reader will read it then it was money well spent. :nod
