My friend had a baby night before last. He weighed in at 11 lbs 5 ounces 22" long. She had an epideral(sp) around 2:00 pm and didn't deliver him until 9:00 pm. She was in delivery for two hours and having a really hard time having him. He did quite alot of damage and after she had him she had to go into emergancy surgery to repair the damage. While she was having him he was fighting it, flipping and rolling around. The Dr. broke my friends tail bone trying to help her push him out. Her mom asked the Dr why they didn't do a c-section and the Dr said the 'specialist' said they couldn't. This was before things got hairy. Why would the 'specialist' say that? The cord was wrapped around his neck three times and they knew he was a big baby!! Anyway my friend is ok and so is the baby, but I just wanted to know if there is a valid reason for not doing a c-section.

My mom had an aquaintence years ago with a similar situation. Her baby ended up with a broken collar bone and brain damage from the birth, and she had some major issues to be repaired as well. They actually ended up suing over it since he was mentally impaired as a result.
There are tiems I suppose when you get far enough into the birth that a c-section can't be performed, but I'd be willing to bet there was time enough to make that decision for your friend. Im glad they're doing ok now. I hope there are no long term effects!

unless she had some kind of allergy to the anesthesia or stitching they'd use. . . I don't really know of anything :thinking

If a baby is especially large and will not fit through the pelvic bones, a C-section is needed. If the baby is not yet "in theater" and has the cord wrapped around his or her throat --- this is a BIG valid reason that people have C-sections and is very common if the baby is breech.

I so hate inductions (done far too often imho), which causes long drawn out deliveries, trauma to mommy and baby - - and a lot of times it could have waited just a few more weeks for baby to turn and say "OK, I'm ready to come!!". :ohno

With a fighting and flipping baby, that should have been a major clue to all doctors and nurses involved that something was terribly wrong with the baby and to rush her into emergency surgery.

I'd definitely request they investigate that, and if it were me, I'd CERTAINLY get a medical lawyer involved to follow them.

Wow ZAGS! So glad God was watching out for your friend and her son!

When my dd had my gd almost 2 years ago, they knew early on that the cord was wrapped around her little neck and got my dd into surgery for a c-section literally within minutes.

The way the docs knew early on was that in the early stages of labor, when my dd had 2 consecutive labor pains, the baby started going into distress which they could see on the fetal monitor. With quick intervention, everything was fine.

I cannot imagine how horrible your friend's delivery must have been, for her and her ds. Are they both okay now?

She and the baby are both doing fine now. The baby wasn't doing so good for a little while then snapped out of it, and T's surgery went well. I would imagine the broken tailbone isn't very comfortable for her, but she is a trooper. I don't know if it has occured to her that she may not be able to have any more children, because of the damage done by the baby's struggles while being born. Personally I don't know if I would want to have anymore after such a horrible experiance. But I am a first class wimp. :lol2
