I don't know if you all have heard of these people...but they protest funerals of dead military soldiers holding signs that read "God hates America'' and some other terrible slogans.
I think that if ANYONE needs prayer, its these people. They truly believe that God is directing them, and that anyone that doesn't agree with their teachings is hellbound.
I guess I just wonder how so many people in one family can be led so astray by one person! (The whole 'church' is family members, about 100 total)
You know, they even give their small children these signs to hold....I feel so sorry for those kids.

That's the Fred Phelps group you're talking about.
Not only is his "church" made up mostly of family, but many of them are lawyers.

A few months ago they protested at the funeral of a soldier killed in Iraq.

That soldier's father filed a lawsuit against them and they haven't been heard from much since then.

Also, in places they've disrupted funerals, law enforcement officers have told them if they came back and did it again and the locals got hostile, the police may not jump right in there to keep the crowds form them.

(It happened close to here in fact).

It's sad to see these people do this because people who might have a negative view of us Christians will only have it reinforced by this group.

Yes..that's true, I read that someplace. What I did find on youtube that was a bit comical to me was a clip of them running for their lives---lol---apparently some people didn't agree with their crazy protests and began to throw rocks at them until they had to run to their vans and get outta there!
Thank God their children weren't there that day. While I can see how people can be so outraged at what they do at funerals, I still wouldn't have found it funny at all if the kids would have been in danger from the crowds...WHICH is exactly what the Phelpses do everytime they bring their kids to these protests....I mean....eventually one of those poor little kids are going to get hurt by some angry crowd member and that will really be awful.
I know its not right to say this, but....doesn't Fred Phelps LOOK evil? I mean...LOOK at him next time you see a pic of him...he truly looks evil....or is it just my perception? Someone once told me that if you practice evil...you do start to look evil. Even Tom Cruise---he used to be good looking, I thought. Now..with all that crazy scientology....his appearence is really starting to take on an evil look, too.
::sigh::: Or, maybe I'm just nuts. lol (could be...:hehee)

By the way...I'm new here....my name is Jen. :)

Daniel1210......That soldier's father filed a lawsuit against them and they haven't been heard from much since then.

He won that lawsuit, and was originally awarded 10.9 million dollars. Then another judge reduced that amount by half, a cool 5 million dollars. I wish more families would sue them.

I didn't know this lawsuit had stopped them from protesting at other funerals. That's great.

I'm new here... I just wanted to say that this man and his family hae EVERYONE in almost and equal ammount. They run website about God hating Denmark, Ireland (I'm Irish) and the US. They wanted to protest Heath Ledger's funeral... knowing his family would have come all the way from Australia to bury their son.

I find it sad and despicable...they just want attention.

I've always wondered if the quick stoppage had more to do with the biker veterans showing up with American flags flying and chains swinging whenever there was a rumor that crowd was coming to disrupt a funeral.

You're probably right about that! God bless those bikers for protecting the families of killed soldiers at the saddest time of their lives.

I still say the other families who had to endure the Westboro nuts at funerals should bring lawsuits against them, too.

These people are reprehensible. Fred Phelps' daughter is their spokesperson and I have seen her on a couple of programs spewing their rubbish. I don't think that thinking people are going to associate Christians with these individuals. However, I really hate the fact that they have the word "Baptist" in the name of their church. Since I belong to the Baptist denomination, that association really irritates me. They do not belong to the Southern Baptist Convention and would never be allowed to join given their doctrinal stance; I just hope that people understand that they really aren't "Baptists."
