For the third time in as many weeks I cannot get into my emails. I know it's because Norton did another update. The last time it did it I went into Norton and turned it off in my emails so that I could at least get them until they patched it. Now I can't even get Norton to open up for me.
:rant
Any suggestions? :candle

Heh, I completely removed all traces of Norton and installed AVG from Grisoft! :thumb Maybe you could just get rid of Norton? AVG integrates well with Outlook.

PC World says there is a real cool FREE anti-virus software download called AVAST. It's an Alwil software. If this link is still good it's at find.pcworld.com/56267. When my subscription with Norton expires I think I'll go with this one. Has anyone else tried it??

I use AVG also and it works very well. Google 'free AVG' b/c Grisoft's website can be difficult to find the free version. I've used AVG for 3+yrs and it works well with Windows Firewall, OL Express, or T-Bird email. No one should pay for an anti-virus pgm. There are great ones out there for FREE!!:)

I agree uninstall Norton if possible and get one of the free anti-virus as mentioned AVG or Avast. I have Avast and have been happy with it.

If you go this route make sure you get the free home edition as the web site is a bit tricky to find the free version. Then you have to register and they send a product key to your e-mail which you enter into the Avast software under "license key". This allows free undates for 14 months then you have to register again to get a renewed key but everything is still free.

I do not like Norton. I used it for several years. As long as there is no problem it is great. But if there is a problem, it is the hardest thing in the world to work with. I tried uninstalling it. I was so frustrated because it said it was uninstalled but there were Norton files and folders all over the place. I hate that. It is my computer and if I want it off, I want it off. So about 3 or 4 years ago, I backed up all that mattered to me and reformatted my drive. I reinstalled everything from scratch and went with AVG. My son said that is what they use at the tee vee station where he works (WLMB). It has been a dream to use. Never a virus. Always updated. FREE! I did buy their firewall though. It is a license for two computers for two years for half the price of Norton at one year on one computer.

AVG is the way to go. Avast is OK, I've used it before but it doesn't automaticaly update (at least not the version I had) and it doesn't automaticaly scan (again...). AVG works very well. I have a paid version with a firewall on my computer and it works very well. I've never been infected since I got AVG. I even put a virus filled hard drive in my computer to try and clean it and AVG found 76 viruses on it. When I put the hard drive back into the computer it came from it ran a LOT better.
One of my friends was using ZoneAlarm antivirus on his computer and I talked him into trying AVG. He likes his computer a lot better now. He also complained that the update file for ZoneAlarm was huge (they have dial-up) and AVG's are pretty small.
I'v also tried PC Tools Antivirus... for about 5 minutes. It makes you computer run really slow too.

That's exactly what I did too. Removing Norton is a multi-step process; simply uninstalling it will not do it all.

Probably easier to just reinstall the OS. On Windows you should do that every 12 months or so.
If you want a really secure PC, try out Linux. You can keep Windows installed alongside it (called dual-boot). Linux is immune to all Windows viruses, comes with a built-in firewall and is free. You don't even need anti-virus software.

I use Avast for antivirus software.
I've written off any and all norton/symantec software products, they're generally more trouble than they're worth.
