Once again I am looking for your opinions (which I value very much). :)

I am extremely impressed by what I see with this so far. My ds is going into 5th grade next year and I am thinking of going with this. The main objection that I have though is the price. :faint

If you've used it tell me what you think. Good, bad, indifferent? Does it take too long to do every day? Does it give too much daily work (a la Saxon :whistle ) Or is is the best thing you've ever used?

Enquiring minds want to know. :hehee

I was using Saxon, which I loved but this year he started 5/4 and it completely overwhelmed him. They did too many different types of problems and the text book reminded me of a college text. Thing is my ds is very quick with math, he just doesent shift gears between "types" of problems very well yet so Saxon is just not a very good fit anymore. We replaced Saxon with Modern Curriculum Press after the first few weeks of school this year and he is doing much better. :thumb Problem is MCP teachers manual only gives the answers and since math isnt my strong point "I" need a more helpful program. This teachingtextbooks seems to fit the bill but the price is really throwing me. I don't want to pay that much and find out that it isn't compatable with us. :panic

Have you had him do the practice problems on their website? They have a demo online you can do to see how it works.

My daughter is using their Geometry this year. I know that's a bit higher level than what you'll be using but they use the same concept. I have to tell you though, my daughter really hates geometry and using this program didn't help her like it more, but she is getting the instruction on the computer. She has had to get outside help a few times because there was something she just didn't understand.

If your son is an independent learner, and can follow the lessons given on the cd's then he should do well with this program. If he needs more one on one instruction with extra help, I would try to find a private instructor for him, and I know that may be difficult to do. Private instructors can be pretty expensive, but you may be able to find someone who will do it cheap. I know a wonderful lady who does private instruction for $15/hour, and she'll do classes for $50/month. Your other option is to find a co-op for him to take his math classes with, where he would be in a class with a teacher and other kids. That would be the cheaper way to do it. I'll be doing that next year for my child when she enters 4th grade. This year she's just taking science through our co-op.

I did have him do the demo. He said they went "too fast" but he was able to get the questions right so he did "get it". :idunno

:thinking It's a tough call. It is an expensive program. We were able to buy it used, but it was still expensive. Try going here http://www.homeschoolreviews.com and see if you find some reviews from other homeschoolers, that should help. Otherwise, other than buying it and trying it there's no way to really tell. What's their return policy? Maybe you can try it and if he doesn't like it, you can return it.

Looks like they have a 30 day return policy.:thinking

I love, love, love TeachingTextbooks.
My son used the 7th grade program last year and this year is using the Pre-Algebra program.

Of course, every child learns differently so what works for one child might not work as well for the next.
At least they have that 30 day return policy. :)

We have used it for the past two years. My son loves it and understands the instructor's daily lessons. He says it makes hard math easier to understand.

I think it's well worth the money.

I coulden't find on the website if this is a spiral approach or not. Do they introduce a new concept every day?

My son said that a new concept is introduced most everyday. However, he says that every new concept learned is reviewed constantly throughout the rest of the chapters so you don't forget them. Each lesson builds on each other and they stay used.

Does that make sense?? I'm not sure If I am explaining it well.

That is helpful, thank you. :hat

If they struggle with a concept could you stop for a few days and just concentrate on that?
