Tokyo stocks fall on Bernanke comment, Japanese real estate slump+

TOKYO, Feb. 15 (AP) - (Kyodo)—(EDS: TO BE LED)
Tokyo stocks declined sharply Friday morning after the outlooks for both the U.S. and Japanese economies were clouded by growth warnings from U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and due to the sluggish performance of the Japanese real estate sector.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, which surged nearly 560 points Thursday, shed 202.52 points, or 1.49 percent, to 13,423.93. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 11.34 points, or 0.85 percent, to 1,321.10.
The Nikkei shed about 270 points at one point before recouping some of the losses in the morning.
Brokers said Tokyo stocks were dragged down after equities sank on Wall Street under the weight of Bernanke's remark at the Senate banking committee Thursday that "it is important to recognize that downside risks to growth remain."
