View Full Version : I want to serve in a mission. Where do I start?

I know this thread is not prophecy or end times related per say, but I know I will get a response faster here.
I really want to become a missionary ASAP. I am almost 26 and I am still in college, but I am willing to put college on hold to join a mission.
My knowledge of the Bible is that of a beginner, but I am learning very fast.
I am single (never married) with no kids.
I applied to SIM (online), but I can't even afford to send myself anywhere.
Aren't there any missions that are free or that are cheap?
I don't care if all I do is farming or whatever. I just want to do it NOW. I don't mind hard labor, grunt work, or whatever, so long as it is directly related to helping spread the Word of Jesus Christ.
I don't care if I get paid or not. I will sleep on the ground with no A/C. I don't care. I am pretty tough (mentally).
I live in Maryland.
Can anyone here help me find something NOW?:)

What advice has your pastor given you?

My church (not a member, but I go) offers mission trips, but they are infrequent. Not being an official member of my church (membership orientation is only 3 times a year an I am new) I do not yet qualify for the sponsorship.

Membership in a bible believing church should be your first goal, long before being a missionary.
Would also be careful to join a bible believing church and not just any church. I can't imagine a bible believing church only opening membership three times a year.

Okay, so the payments are more flexible, but I don't have the $$$ to fund myself.
$28 for the application. $200 for the deposit. Then, a payment schedule after that (very fair and relatively cheap, but I am unable to do it.)
Okay...hmmmm....aren't there any local volunteer missions in the US? I am willing to drive anywhere in the US (I will budget for gas). Maybe I am not supposed to be overseas just yet.
I just want to help spread the word.
I am willing to give ALL of my time to spread the word. How can I do that without having to pay an application fee or a deposit?

From their website (mcleanbible.org):
How Do You Become a Member?
Attend a New Member Orientation
Next Meeting is Sunday, September 23, from 2:00 -5:00pm in Community Room C
This 3 hour class is held 3 times a year. It is a requirement for all prospective members. This is a great way to learn about our vision, values, staff, and beliefs. It is also your opportunity to ask Lon Solomon, Senior Pastor, questions about the church.

I would look for a different church. Making people wait for four months to join the church is not biblical.
