I have become so sick and tired of the cost of beauty products and the fact that most don't work. Also, I have been wanting to use more homemade/natural products, so I thought it might be interesting to share some unusual beauty tips/rituals we have, so others can try them out.

I'll start with three that I've recently added to my skincare regimen:

1. I have been using brown sugar mixed with water as my scrub. It works fabulously (much better than any facial scrub I have ever bought). It leaves my skin soft and has improved the look of my pores quite a bit. The brown sugar also makes a great lip and body scrub. I use this scrub three to four times a week.

2. I have discovered a very strange, almost miraculous cure for my blackheads. It's Elmer's white glue (non-toxic kind). It works like those peel-off face masks that you buy in a tube. Just put a thin layer (don't slather it on, LOL) on the areas where you have blackheads, let dry, and peel off. Finish by rinsing your face with lukewarm water, followed by a quick rub of facial toner to make sure all the residue is off. I noticed an improvement in the blackheads (especially on my nose) in 2 days. I use this mask two to three times a week.

3. Speaking of facial toner...I have discovered that a mixture of apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and water makes a great facial toner. I put about 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and 1 cup cold water into a spritzer bottle and shake to mix. I use this toner everyday.

Preperation H works well for puffy eyes. :whistle It's not natural but it is cheap and it does work. :thumb

I think a lot of women already know about this one, but thought I'd share it for those who don't b/c it's a real money saver.

You can use Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel as a make-up primer. Just apply a thin layer under your foundation. It fills in your pores, and makes your foundation glide on and last longer. A little goes a long way.

I bought the 1.5 oz. tube in the feminine section at WalMart for about $5, which is about 1/7 the cost of the "real" primers, which for the same size tube are between $30-$40!

Oh.. I am going to have to try the blackhead one!!

Witch hazel is a good toner, but I don't have overly oily skin and it does dry my skin out. It is cheap too

I know that some of these remedies do seem to work in the short term--just a friendly word of advise--think of the skin as a giant sponge--it soaks up everything you put on it. Chemicals, bacteria etc. Also the skin on the face and neck is thinner and much more sensitive. I am all for trying natural and cheaper alternatives---but to put glue (we all know what glue is made of) plus the other chemicals which are added is not a good idea.

I'll have to try that brown sugar one. What's the mix ratio you use?

If you're getting a really deep pimple. Ice it!

It seriously works. Ice it with a cold pack from the fridge (wrap a wash cloth around it if it's too cold). And hold it there on your deep pimple/cyst for 2 minutes. Repeat as desired. I usually do it when I'm watching tv, so I tend to hold it on longer. It doesn't seem to hurt any.
Usually the pimple will shrink and the swelling should go down by evening. If not, usually by the next day if it's stubborn.

This is great because it keeps you from picking at it and squeezing. It also reduces pain due to swelling.

mix about 1/4 c powdered milk with a tbs of honey as a face wash. I have also read that plain powdered milk makes a good wash. (regular, not lowfat)

I'll try to remember the web site that I found this on and post later.

There was link on this site (somewhere) that lead to another that was all about using homemade skin care stuff.
