Pain of Separation
By Maxine M.

A moment of anger, a jealous rage, ended in a brother slain
Abel dead upon the ground, Cain's hands carrying a bloody stain
Their parents the first to feel death's separation pain

First to lay a loved one in God's newly created earth
First to know death's sorrow, while remembering the joy of his birth
Did they see this as the price of disobedience, the curse, for all it's worth?

That same pain has been handed down from every generation to today
It can engulf us like a cloud, thick and gray
Creating a sense of aloneness and loss, like a child who's lost his way

When OTHERS have lost parents, children, spouse or friend
We tried to comfort, telling them one day this pain will end
That time will be a healer, their heartache will mend

But when it's OUR child, OUR parent, OUR spouse, it becomes overwhelmingly real
Our mind says "It's just part of life; but the mind can't tell the heart how to feel
Complacency now gone and security lost, logic has lost it's appeal

Some we have lost who've lived a full life, well advanced in years
Thankfully, their love, devotion and advice our memory still hears
Never-the-less, the loss brings separtion pain and moves us to tears

Then some have been taken long before WE thought their hour was due
Adding shock, disbelief and the intensity of the pain just grew and grew
But somehow, we clung to Christ's promise to make ALL things new

For Jesus Himself, Who knew separtion and pain, wept a grieving tear
Mary's heart must have been broken watching her Son, knowing death was near
The disciples were devastated, hiding, in doubt, uncertainty and fear

Saying, "We thought He was the One, the prophets had spoken of for so long
Only days ago, He was acclaimed by the cheering throng
Now He's been crucified & buried. How could it all go so wrong?"

"How could Judas, so easily our Master betray?"
"But at the 1st sign of trouble, didn't we ALL run away?"
Pain of separation, mixed with guilt and shame, a high price to pay

BUT THEN came "Easter Morning"!! Hope, joy, gladness rebounded
"He's Risen", "He's Risen Indeed", through the garden resounded
The grave couldn't hold Him, the Christian faith had beed founded

The same will be true, for ALL who have died IN the Lord
Pain of separation, finally forever gone, ALL will be of one accord
For being with Him and our loved ones, will be our greatest reward
