Anyone know the shelf-life for coffee; ground in a can? Last week I bought a can and when I went to open it, I noticed the top was kind of puffed up, when I opened it, it literally exploded. I had coffee grounds all over my kitchen and on me, about a 5 foot radius of grounds! Never saw such a thing in my life. I am too afraid to use it. Get this...I poured what was left in the can out into a big bowl, to see if there was something weird in there, (like a rodent or something) but it was just coffee grounds and when I went to pour it back into the can-just what was from the bowl....it wouldn't all fit??? This didn't include the coffee that had flown all over the place which was about an additional 4 or 5 cups of coffee grounds. Maybe they just over packed it? It was a 39 oz can, but I could have filled up close to 2 cans with what came out of it. :scratch

4 - How long does coffee remain fresh?
Coffee tastes best if consumed 7-10 days after it was roasted. However, our coffee is packaged immediately after roasting in heat sealed foil bags with one-way degassing valves. This allows carbon dioxide to escape, but does not allow oxygen in (exposure to oxygen is what causes coffee to stale). This type of packaging will keep coffee fresh until you open the bag, even if that is weeks from the time you purchased it. After opening, use the ziplock feature to keep it fresh.

I wonder if oxygen absorbers and a sealed container can extend the shelf life by years?

It sounds like it was pressure packed. Probably safe, but these days who knows. Did you toss it out?

I would take it back to the store. This should not happen to a consumer, and a full refund should be issued either by the grocer or by the maker of the coffee. Companies often issue refunds in the form of product coupons, which is fine with me, just so the loss is made up.

BNL,
I know this is strange. Perhaps you understand this. After reading your coffee experience, a thought did cross my mind, but that is after laughing at such a scene in my mind, and imagining your expression with it.
I was reminded of how Jesus fed the multitudes on 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
This thread is titled food shelf life.
Well, I am at a loss to explain this abundance of coffee. Perhaps it was vacuum packed, but I have never heard of that in a can.
I guess maybe it is just that I was reminded that Jesus was able to increase the supply.
I believe he can do this for tribulation saints as well.
I hope you don't take offense at my laughter.

Coffee releases gasses. Not toxic or anything. That is why the bags of whole beans at the store have that one way value (looks like a circle with a dot in the center.)

FarmBoy- That ladies shelves look exactly like mine!:woah I got mine at Lowe's and have about 3 or 4 in my garage. I do have food supplies stocked on 2 of them like hers. I go to a place here called "save-a-lot" and buy canned goods by the case-very cheap.
Biblenuggetlady- Maybe it was just accidentally overfilled or like they posted above, Jesus supplying the overbundance, pressed down, shaken together and over flowing!!!:thumb

I like the second explanation!
