My dd is expecting her first baby on March 20. However, at her ob check yesterday she was 50% effaced and 2 cm dilated. Sooooo the dr. doesn't think it will be too long now. Does anyone know what all this means? I had 5 c-sections so not too familiar with the progression of a vaginal birth. She is having contractions and cramps too.

First of all, congratulations grandma!!! both of my kids were c-sections too, however, i really wanted a vaginal birth for them really bad so i read up on everything i could regarding labor and the birth process. 50% effaced means she is definitely on the way to having her baby. effacing of the cervix is the softening of the tissue to help make dilation easier, the closer you get to 100% effaced, the easier and faster the cervix will dilate. Since this is her first baby, it may take a while though. althought every woman is different regarding first children. 2 cm dilated is not considered that much dilated, (i.e. i was 2 cm dilated for 2 weeks before my kids were actually born). contractions and cramps are a sure sign that her body is preparing to deliver.
**other posters and lurkers, if any of this info is not correct, please correct me as i'm not a dr. by any means!! :hehee **
It definitely sounds like her baby may come before the 20th, so i would make sure you stand by that phone and wait for the phone call. congratulations, babies are such a blessing, i wish i could have 20 more! (well some days i wish that! :aha )

:yeah:yeah Excellent! Sounds like she can go anytime. 2 cm is awesome (have to get to 10 to push out baby) and 50% effaced is super great!
Her braxton hicks may just change to labor pains!
Yay Grandma!!:hug:hug:yeah
Let us know! I am very excited for you!!

I have two boys....so I can say you are correct by my knowledge...(but I'm no doctor either)...but every woman is different...(I had two c-sections too....but I was in labor with both for a while before I had my c-section because the first they didn't realize that my body wasn't able to give birth....and the 2nd one....i had to wait for a room(I was in so much pain because of scar tissue, twisted uterus...etc that it felt like forever!)any way....u can watch my two boys....or at least my youngest boy and you will change your mind about 20 more....lol....Alexander is a handful! he climbs everything!! he gets into everything! Austin (my oldest) is soooo different....he was always so good....

Oh yes. She lives about a mile from me. She and her husband, Nick, have asked me to be in the delivery room with them.
