A few days ago it was really windy out and I woke up about 5 in the morning with this loud popping noise. I was wondering what it was because it was shaking my bed and getting louder. I figured out that it was my DVD player (a cheap one with surround sound built in). I pushed the power button and it turned on then I shut it off and it was still making the noise. I finally pulled the plug out of the wall and it stopped. Today, we moved the TV out of my room and gave it away. When my step dad brought it to it's new home, it didn't work. It wouldn't turn on at all. When my step dad came home we thought that maybe something happened to it the morning my DVD player woke me up. I plugged in my DVD player and put a cd in it and found that the amplifier in it is shot. All that comes out of it is a distorted mess. (the speakers might be fried too but I have no way to test them. And the DVD player smells fried). Is it possible that a power surge caused this? Could it have something to do with an old interference filter that both the TV and the DVD player were plugged into?
Nothing else in the house appears to be affected, even the computer my step dad was working on when this happened.
Any ideas?

By any chance, was either the DVD player or TV a Sony?

Sony products are NOTORIOUS for suddenly (and inexplicably) dying...

It will be cheaper to buy a replacement than to try a repair.

No. The dvd player is a durabrand (way cheeper than Sony) and the TV is a nice Sharp. Oh well, neither were important. I still have my pc.

My $1200 Sony Vaio laptop did the same a few months back! :doh :( It must have been a power surge.
