Gas is so expensive now! I have literally been planning where I need to go, when and if someone else is going, trying to see if we can carpool together. Pretty soon I think I am going to have to walk/bike everywhere! I would save at least $550 month if I didn't have a car with my car payment, insurance and gas.
I don't know how you guys are making it! Gas is so expensive now. I really fear it going up ... cars and driving may become a luxury not the norm. :idunno

A few good things might come out of this yet:
- Hybrids get better and better at squeezing more mileage out of a gallon of gas, and as more folks buy them the price difference drops
- More investment in public transport
- More investment building sidewalks and bike lanes
All the above is pretty much standard in Europe, where gas has always been more expensive. It hasn't meant Europeans have given up driving, they've just balanced their transportation modes.
I wonder what the upshot will be for much of American suburbs and exurbs...some of those places probably might not be viable as places to live and commute to work if gas keeps going up the way it does...unless there's a big increase in public transport...buses and the like.

True in most circumstances and it may happen eventually. Right now and near to mid term it will be painful, especially when noting the speed and accelerating speed of the increases. Most city/states are walking bankruptices right now so investment will be delayed.
Car companies are cutting back in R&D as they are facing a crunch because credit is drying up which historically fuels their business and drives consumer demand.
I took the bus/metrolink to work today. It saved me $8 in gas. I am going to have to make it a practice. I can buy more gold and supplies that way.

We're in the process of closing on a new home, and Im so excited that we're only a mile or two from the grocery store and many conveniences. Im hoping to be self-disciplined enough to put the kids on their bike and walk/ride to the store more often rather than drive.

I live in the biggest city in the US (landwise). My dad and grandmother both live about 25 miles away from me in both directions. Public transportation is pretty much non-existent here.
I don't think I will be able to afford driving much longer.

WOW!! I would love to have gas at those prices. 1 gallon for $3.49, that's $.767 a litre. Here in Alberta, Canada we have huge supply of oil and lots of oil rigs, so no short supply on oil. We pay $1.089 for a litre of gas or $4.95 a US gallon. And prices are going up up up. I would say 30%-40% of people drive big pickups here too.

$3.54 for regular up here in the great frozen north. Though we traveled yesterday about an hour and a half south and it was only $3.32 there. Needless to say we filled up.
