Today my family and I went to my parent’s house for Easter lunch. My fathers sister Aunt S. joined us for lunch as well (many may have read me talk about her, she is the one who has given me so many things that were my Grandparents in the last few months; if you haven’t read about her or the gifts, it is a few pages back in my blog, mostly in November and December). Anyway, she brought more wonderful things for me that was my grandmothers. Looking through the pictures and reading the hand written letters from that time period today made me think of the hard times my Grandmother had living through the Great Depression. Both of her parents died when she was a young girl (her mother when she was 9 and her father when she was 11) and she was sent to live with her numerous siblings, mostly her oldest brothers who were trying to make enough money working in the oil fields in Louisiana at the time. Once her oldest sister was married they sent her to live with her back in Tennessee. She was taught then how to sew and farm and how to work in the fields to help bring any amount of money that she could home to help. I was so sad to hear that she married very young mainly because she needed a husband to help her stay alive. I thought about how it might feel if we had to go through that again and if I would have to marry off my oldest daughter just so I had enough money to feed the younger children. By looking at her pictures (some going all the way back to 1919) I was reminded how truly horrible the Great Depression really was and how sad and old everyone looked. I don’t want to ever have to go through sending my girls off to finding husbands just to survive. I know starting this week, I am getting my ducks in a row, and making sure we have a set plan, making sure we have enough food and then making sure that I can also help any and all family that I can. Once again, my Grandmother has spoken to me from Heaven. Thank Lord Jesus for the precious girt! :pray

How do we prepare for something like that?

pay off debt and start buying food and commodities now. Make sure you're giving 110% at work so that if they have to start laying off and have a choice, you're the one they'll want to keep because you work hard and honestly.
start building a good network with other believers in the area for a good support network both spiritually and physically.

BUT.... even if you stockpile food, etc. the military will be allowed to come in and take it all if they're ordered.:idunno

How to prepare for a depression? As said, by another, pay off debt, including and especially debt on your home. Gather up a store of provisions... Pray and seek to become fully transformed into a child of God of unconditional love.
Prepare in abundance, because if times so difficult come upon us, you will likely feel a need to share with your neighbors and with all those in need you come across until your stores are empty, and ultimately, you and I will be fully dependent upon the Lord for our basic needs. Your generosity and kindness will be a valuable witness for God, and good should come from it.

That's good advice, your neighbors need not necessarily be believers, but may be transformed by the times they are facing, your witness, and the new found interdependence they are experiencing. In my area, everyone is on large lots of 4 acres or more, some are religious, some are Christian, some are just unsaved good country folk. The closeness is really something though. It's funny, because the only ones who don't socialize much are the ones who seem to be the most visible believers... It's not that they won't say 'boo' to anyone, they are just very reserved and inward. I know my unsaved neighbors far better and have great trust in them, it's a strange thing.

amen and amen to both Tall Timbers and 67x's.
Sad that we Christians tend to give off a "stay back" air rather than a "come closer" aura. :( I pray that isn't so for my family and I....:(

If they can find it... :heh
:aha :thumb But they are well trained to search and FIND what they're looking for.
