Has anyone else run into it yet? We were driving from Dallas to NW Ark last night and stopped to put in gas at a Pilot Truck Stop Station in Oklahoma. It only allowed us to put $50 in and then the pump stopped. I told my husband that its only a sign of things to come. Any thoughts?:thinking

I live in OK and it's pretty common for pumps to stop at $50 or $75 depending on which credit card you use for gas. Apparently, if the transaction is higher than the $50 or $75 limit, the gas station is charged additional fees from the card company. Most places have a sign on the pump telling you to swipe the card again if you need more gas.

Not that we won't see rationing someday soon, but I don't think that's what you experienced.

That has happened to me a couple of times this year, both for $75 (which unfortunately did not fill my truck). The first time I went in to inquire as to why . The explanation was a limitation imposed on the use of Debit cards and affected anyone using that mode of payment, not a personal thing, or rationing.

We have always been able to put more than $50 in at this station before so that is why it struck us as out of the ordinary. Anyone else?

Did you use an ATM or credit card? Some gas stations in Huntsville, AL have notices on their pumps stating that the Visa and other credit/ATM card companies are limiting the fill-up amount to $50 per use.

What I do is put $50 in. Then re-insert the ATM card for the rest.

It seems strange. I first noticed it last year in Indy...then didn't see it again until last month, but only at one place. It's not at all stations, but is popping up and that makes me wonder. The last station I saw it at was Speedway- $50, and only on MC/VISA transactions.

We used an ATM card as we always do. Its never limited us before at this particular location so thats why I thought things had already started rolling toward gas rationing.

We have that in some areas here. It doesn't matter how you pay for the gas, they only allow you to take $50 worth.

I think alot of it has to do with the way debit cards work. If you only have 5 bucks on your card the pump will allow you to gas up past that limit actually making your card go into the negative. It's a saftey feature so people can't steal hundrededs of dollars of gas.

I would agree with that, but it happens with credit cards too...
