Arkansas, my home state, rarely is in the national news. This past week a meat packing plant exploded, the White River is flooded at record levels, and now these five children died in a fire. These are surely the last days.
BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Five children died in a Bentonville house fire Tuesday.
Fire Chief Dan White said the children were upstairs, while their parents were asleep downstairs when the fire broke out. The fire call came in at 1:22 a.m.
The parents were awakened by a smoke alarm but they could not get upstairs because of the smoke and flames, White said. The blaze appeared to be accidental, he said.
The children ranged in age from 7 to 13.
"They were all in the same family," White said.
Their names have not been released.
Police and fire officials called a news conference for 2 p.m. Central time.
