A clay tablet that has baffled scientists for 150 years has been identified as a witness's account of the asteroid suspected of being behind the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Researchers who cracked the cuneiform symbols on the Planisphere tablet believe that it recorded an asteroid thought to have been more than half a mile across.

The tablet, found by Henry Layard in the remains of the library in the royal place at Nineveh in the mid-19th century, is thought to be a 700 B.C. copy of notes made by a Sumerian astronomer watching the night sky.

He referred to the asteroid as a "white stone bowl approaching" and recorded it as it "vigorously swept along."

Asteroids have to do what God tells them....just like any other element, or created object.

It could have been an asteroid that God chose to use...

exactly, it's just refreshing to see modern science prove it

Who says God didn't speak an asteroid or many asteroids into being right above the earth and command them to destroy the city's. Well then after a few years someone is bound find them or something to do with the account unless God spoke to them and told them to vanish, but i doubt that :D

I saw something on the History channel this week-end along these lines. My question is this: according to the Fox news piece referenced above, the area of destruction was 386,000 sq. miles. In reading the text ~ Gen. 19: 15-28 ~ v. 20 has Lot referring to a small town near enough to run to. They left Sodom at the coming of the dawn, v.15, and reached Zoar when the sun had risen over the land, v. 23. There is no inference of a prolonged journey, but more like a sprint...near enough to run to. It sounds like this happened in one day...how could Lot have gotten enough far enough from Sodom to avoid his own destruction, if, in fact, the area of devastation was so large? I don't doubt anything the Bible says, I know God rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah. I have to believe it was a focused direct hit. Just this question spinning around in my head, not even that important :-/

And said asteroid(s) would have been on fire from entering the atmosphere also.

There is reference (when describing the destruction of Sodom and G AND their surrounding towns...)..doesn't say how big an area was destroyed except perhaps Lot was running in the opposite direction...jmho..not too complicated! :)

I like it when science proves the bible however this one doesn't sit well with me for some reason. It just seems to cheepen the supernatural. Kind of like what it will be like when the seal and bowl judgments fall on earth. I am sure "science" will have a great explanation for that too.
Also does an asteroid falling to the earth explain Lots wife turing into a pillar of salt?
