View Full Version : Do I take the job??

I have a dilemma and hoped you guys would offer your opinion.
My current job offers a lot of freedom for me to build my division, manage personnel from my Christian perspective, and I interact with the owners of the company quite regularly. We have a good working relationship even though they see me as "Religious" and they are not judgemental about my beliefs.
Here is the issue that I have.
I was offered a position with another company for a substantial increase in salary. The manager of the division I would work for is a devout Christian as we have had hours of conversations about the Bible and the Lord. My best friend, who is also saved, works in that division as well. I would be surrounded with people that have common views and manage accordingly. I would have a little less freedom however I think the atmosphere and fellowship would make up for it. I have never made a career decision solely based on money as I know where that leads but I think it would be a blessing to work in the company of Christian men.
Any advice? I have prayed about it but I don't really feel led to go one way or the other. What is your take?

The way I would look at it would be how will it affect my family? Even though you get more income do you get less vacation/sick time? How are the medical and dental benefits with the new offer compared to your current job? How about retirement? If I would gain income and somehow was fortunate enough to gain more time off without losing major benefits than I would quite possibly take the new job. Any time I can gain more time off with the family, or for just myself, then I would do it.
If, however, the new offer would make me have less time with the family (new increased travel commute, or less vacation/sick time off) then I probably wouldn't take it. :) If it was me and I wasn't married and didn't have kids then I would probably take the job, but that's me. Consult with the Lord, your wife(again if there is one), and kids(again if you have any) then go ahead and make a decision. This is what I would do.
However, you may really need the extra finances. In the long run they could help you reach your long-term financial goals more quickly. That is something to consider. As long as it doesn't end up burning you out and take away most of your family time (or personal free time) the extra income, plus working with like-minded folks could make your life more pleasant. Either way, please feel free to let us know what you do. I, for one, would be interested in hearing how the Lord led you on this. :)

Here's something my pastor likes to say.
If the request is wrong, God says no.
If the timing is wrong, God says slow.
If you are wrong, God says grow.
But if the request is right, the timing is right, and you are right, God says go.
Let the peace of God rule in your heart. I'd keep praying and seeking His word and I'm sure you'll be fine. :thumb
I did think that working with other Christians would be a completely better work environment, but in my experience it wasn't always the case. :idunno(I'm not taking a stand one way or the other, just sharing my experience)
Also, if I were in that position I'd ask myself why am I contemplating leaving my current employer? None of us can know what God's will is for you, so it's a decision you need to keep lifting up to the Lord. Even if you just aren't sure and stay where you're at, God has a way of working His will. The door may open up again. :thumb

This is an important consideration. The fact that you have the freedom to do your job the way your do is a very good thing to ponder. This contributes alot to enjoying your work. If the propspective job you are looking at is going to place you in a more restrictive condition, then I would say to think twice before accepting something else. Just because there may be other believers in this other job and that more money is on the table, may not neccessarily mean that it's the best thing. You have to look more closely at the pros and cons.

Not necessarily a negative. Living right in front of these folks is a good thing.

God will let you make your own decisions, but if you inquire of Him on it, then keep your eyes open for clues. Pay attention to the details and think through what comes to mind.

Let me add that because we spend most of our lives at our jobs, that it is very important that we choose what facilitates a more happy, even-keeled existence. I have chosen jobs before that ended up being a mistake. So ensuring all points are considered: the time/committment demanded of us, the type of work, the people we will report to and work with, benefits, travel time, late hours, perks, freedom, your state of mind in a role like this, etc.
Put it all on the table and think about how you would fare mentally and emotionally with it. The more info you have, the better the perspective you will have on it.

Another good thought to consider is this: Are you being 'pressured' in any way to make a 'hasty or quick' decision in the matter? In other words, are the folks at the new company pushing you even a little bit to not let this opportunity get away? Although we are no longer in the season of life where job changes are on the horizon, in the past, however, if something was being put forward for our consideration without much time to think it through carefully giving it lots of prayer, it was not usually of God. Don't know if this is of any help to you, but thought I'd share it in case it is. :)

You might consider which job would allow you to make a greater impact in the world from a missions perspective...that is to say, are you making a greater impact in your current job or would that happen in the new one if you took it. It's great to surround ourselves with likeminded believers, but at the same time, if that's all we do, then it sorta takes us out of the "world" where people need to be impacted with the gospel. But then again, the increase in salary may enable you to support missions more with your money.

One more thing to consider is, if things get tight which job would be around longer? Do you have seniority where you are at and would that make a difference?:thinking
