Thought this was an interesting article. It's a common question unbelievers (and even those who profess to be Christian) throw out there as if this is reason enough not to read the Bible.

For me it is the unity of the book that is the biggest confirmation. Sixty six books written over such a large period of time by many different human authors and it has a unity that could only be done by God. Unity of purpose and thought. I can't read it without seeing the unity.

Then the timeless nature of the book. Read any book written in the past and you will find things that are only true and relevant in the generation and culture that they were written. Yet read the bible and it is amazing in its timeless relevance.

Then the confirmation of the Holy Spirit. God's word has purpose. And that purpose is the revelation of God. God's Holy Spirit works within us to reveal God.

So I personal feel it is only a matter of reading it. For an unbeliever the Gospel of John would be a good place to start. I would suggest to an unbeliever, try reading that and see if you think God wrote it. Anyone honest could not read it and say that He didn't.

If you want to see what I mean try reading some of the books of the Apocrypha. I did that and it is very clear the difference.

:thumb I couldn't agree with you more! If people would just read the Book before they criticize what they think it teaches they might have a whole different perspective.

Personally, I think knowing the Scriptures - I don't mean memorizing them; I mean understanding them - will be our "get outa jail free card." We know there will be many false Christs and much apostasy in these last days. How can we recognize the false teachings if we don't first KNOW the TRUTH? :idunno

Yep. That's the biggest problem. People hear something on tv or from a friend and are quick to discredit anything the bible says. It's almost comforting to them because now they dont have to feel like they are doing anything wrong.

It bothers me when people say, "Oh I believe in God but not everything in the bible." It's the buffet-style Christianity. Take what you like and leave the rest at the counter. :ohno

Yes, we cannot deny the Bible has an extraordinary quality to it. I'm sure most of you are aware of the translation of the Septuagint? 77 rabbis set out to translate the OT from Hebrew to Greek before the time of Jesus. When they compared their copies, they discovered that they had WORD FOR WORD written the exact same Greek translation. Why? Because it is God's Word, not man's! Why can't people realize this!?!?

Freed:

I'm afraid you've been taken in by an ancient tale.

The story of the Septuagint being translated independently and identically by 72 (not 77) elders (not rabbis) is truly the stuff of legend, promulgated by Philo of Alexandria (de Vita Mosis, II, 7 and II, 141), a further elaboration of the already legendary account of the Greek translation of the Pentateuch which is the subject of the Letter of Aristeas.

It's all quite fanciful, not historical.
