this may be a really silly question, but how do i use alt codes with a laptop since it dosen't have a number pad? i have the row of numbers along the top of the letter keys, but these do not seem to allow me to use alts....

If you turn on NUM LOCK then half of your keyboard will turn into the ten key pad. there are little numbers on the letter keys on that side of the key board.
I use it all the time because the one key on my laptop is shot.
