I was reading in the book of Romans and I found a verse that said "You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? Romans 2:22.
Do you think that downloading illegal software would fall into this category? :scratch

B2H:
I don't think it would specifically fall under robbing temples, since software manufacturers are not temples.
But pirating software is theft -- no doubt about that.

Well I was thinking if you consider the computer a "type" of false god or idol, wouldn't that be the same?

a computer is a tool, was invented to be a tool, it might become an idol for some, but its still a computer

....about pirating, say you bought the bible and uploaded it on to your comp (a dramatized version) and you wanted to share it so others could have it. I don't know if that is wrong cause i own it and am sharing it but the people who download it don't own it. I asked my GF and she didn't know what to say so im glad i came across this :)

A computer can be a false idol.
Robbing God's temple is not giving back to God what is due Him; we should tithe and give to God's ministry.
And software piracy is a sin, including copy written music and dramatizations.

i want to think about PC as false idol a little more. i use my computer a lot, but i'm inclined to separate where i go and what i do on the computer to be a false idol.
if my laptop were to break down and need to be fixed, it wouldn't be the machine i would miss, it would be the access to information i'd have to get along without. i could use anyone's machine to access the info- at least the online stuff.
would it be the downloaded stuff that is on my hardrive that is a potential false idol?
...not arguing, just thinking about it....
.....i agree that if you buy a a Bible on CD that has a copyriht, and make copies to share- that is piracy IMHO
if you download, say DrMcGee's Bible Bus and put it on disk and share it out, you are allowed since they expressly permit it- as long as it remains unaltered, all credits remain intact and that you not charge a single cent for sharing it. i plan to make copies for my church's library...
oh, and while i am babbling, i might as well double check on something else. I also bought a Bible on cd collection- the ones from the Dollar Tree, narrated KJV, (to get the entire Ot and NT it was around 75 discs at $1` a pop- i bought them bit by bit over about 9 months (it was easier to do it that way than pay $50-$100 all at once)
I plan on downloading the discs to my storage drive thingy, and after i do that, i wonder if it would be a violaton to then give the cd's to my church school's library. i have them all in order in a zipped booklet case.
am i walking a thin line by doing that? its mainly laziness that has kept me from doing it yet, but untill this thread- it never occurred to me that it might be improper :idunno

The thing is -- you don't actually own the software you purchase. When you buy a computer program, you're not actually purchasing the software. You're merely buying a license to use it. And the license specifies the parameters of your use, to which you agree when you click the "I agree" checkbox you have to click when you install a program. It's as if someone loaned you a tool and you signed an agreement restricting your use of the tool but then you went and loaned the tool out to someone else (especially if you received payment from the third party).
