What responses to do you all give to people who ask if those who die without hearing the gospel will go to hell? I'm pretty sure I read a scripture regarding this issue, but I can't remember what it was.

I tell them that regardless of people hearing the gospel or not, we all deserve hell. Salvation is not because we hear the gospel. Salvation is of the Lord... He does the saving. If there's someone who has been chosen before the foundation of the world as the Bible says, then that person will hear the gospel. I ask the person asking the question if they believe they are going to heaven and go from there and witness for Christ to them. If it's a Christian asking, then we could go into the Bible more to help the person out, but since this was posted in Evangelism, I'm assuming you mean an unregenerate person... an enemy of God is who you are referring to about the question. The person needs to understand the holiness of God and the sinfulness of sin to really understand the answer, I think.

Faithandgrace, this is probably the one you are thinking of:

Romans 1:18-20

"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. "

and the sky aboveproclaims his handiwork.

For whatever reason, I cannot edit my above post, but I should have quoted icebear rather than MsSophie.

When I was young, I asked my mom this very question, and this was the verse she used. God reveals himself to all people, no matter where they are, and they all have chance to find Christ. Not hearing the gospel does not give a person a free ticket to heaven.

John 15:22

"If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin."

There are also distinctions made between the punishment of those who had more reason to believe than others (e.g., Matt 11:21: "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you")

If someone truly seeks after God, then God will literally move heaven and earth to provide enough information for their salvation. That information might come in the form of a missionary, radio broadcast, or a vision or visitation.
