While finishing up the setup of my new Linux desktop system (Mepis 7.0) , I was looking around for Bible study tools to add to the system and stumbled across this:
FireBible (http://thegoan.com/firebible/)
It was a little tricky to set up, but now I have both a standalone program (JSword/BibleDesktop) and a Firefox addin available for Bible reading and study on my Linux system. JSword/BibleDesktop is the Java version of the Bible software put out by the SWORD project, so there are lots of additional study modules available to add on to it, and the FireBible developers say that they will be supporting those additional modules in the future.
I also tried the FireBible installation on my WinXP Home system and everything went as smoothly as I could have expected.
The steps I used were:
1. Install Java 6 runtime environment from Sun (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp). If you already have Java 1.4.2 or later installed, you should be able to skip this step.
2. Download and install BibleDesktop software from SWORD project (http://crosswire.org/bibledesktop/download.html). If you already have BibleDesktop installed on your system, you should be able to skip this step.
3. Open BibleDesktop and install ESV and KJV Bible text modules. Close BibleDesktop.
4. Open Firefox and install FireBible (http://thegoan.com/firebible/) addon.
5. Restart Firefox and FireBible toolbar appears in Firefox.
6. Click on Tools->FireBible in Firefox menu bar and select C:\Program Files\CrossWire\BibleDesktop for JSword directory and click OK.
7. After a few seconds, ESV and KJV appear as options in the Select Bible dropdown box on the FireBible toolbar.
8. Select your preferred version, book, and chapter and start reading.
Yet another good reason to ditch Internet Explorer in favor of Firefox.
