MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing. Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.
At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.
"Where's the rice?" an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. "You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous."
The bustling store in the heart of Silicon Valley usually sells four or five varieties of rice to a clientele largely of Asian immigrants, but only about half a pallet of Indian-grown Basmati rice was left in stock. A 20-pound bag was selling for $15.99.
"You can't eat this every day. It's too heavy," a health care executive from Palo Alto, Sharad Patel, grumbled as his son loaded two sacks of the Basmati into a shopping cart. "We only need one bag but I'm getting two in case a neighbor or a friend needs it," the elder man said

This is a little sooner than expected...

If articles like this start coming out more and more and and as a result more people begin to hoard, that is when the real food problem snowballs. Hopefully it does not get that bad.

The basmati rice is the only kind our Sam's had last week... I got 5 extra bags... that's our preferred rice. Sam's still has a little bit left but has no other rice. It'll be interesting to see how local restaurants get creative to fill diner's plates.

I've never considered myself a hoarder, but always try to have a few months worth of food on hand... one never knows...

Unfortunately it will because price of food is forward looking. Grain, rice, etc will go up much higher in price because of shortages and overall price inflation. Hording will take place.

Higher prices will translate into more farmland going into production worldwide. More food will come online, but the problem is that it will take a couple of growing seasons to see any impact from this. I don't know about you, but I probably will need to eat before that extra production kicks in.

The black horseman may be saddling up.

I serve it with meals, usually seasoned or with a sauce of some sort.
Bottom line though, when times get tight it's a quick, cheap way to keep your tummy full.
