Is this a 'glorified' driver's license? (I read the link, and tried to get more info., but it was sketchy.)

I got this off another board.
Real ID Coming May 11, 2008 -
On May 11 of next year the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will issue the Real ID to all U.S. citizens. What does that mean for you and me? Well, if you live or work in the United States, you'll need a federally approved ID card (Real ID) to travel on an airplane, train, open a bank account, collect Social Security payments, or take advantage of nearly any government service. Practically speaking, your driver's license likely will have to be reissued to meet federal standards. All Americans will have a 5 year grace period where you will be able to switch over to the new system and then after May 11 of 2013 the Real ID will be “official“ and all other types identifications will not be accepted.
In order to get a Real ID you will be required to show your birth certificate, proof of address and citizenship, photo ID, and Social Security cards which are just some of what you might be asked to present to the DMV. If you enter an establishment and are required to show your Real ID all of your personal information can be scanned and digitally stored from the RFID or strip on your card, such as your: name, birth date, bleep, ID number, a digital photograph (Notice that the image above also shows the individuals religion. Why would the DHS want to know your religious beliefs?)
Homeland Security may also add additional requirements — such as a fingerprint or retinal scan — they won’t issue their specifications for the Real ID for several months. The Department of Homeland Security is in charge of the Real ID and each card will have personal data encoded on a strip and/ or a RFID chip. DHS contemplates using the REAL ID system as part of its Federal border security program and requested comments on how States could incorporate long-range radio frequency identification ("RFID") technology into the REAL ID card so that it could be used as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

I would not accept one of these 'real ID's'. ; }>

KY already has one. They scan it and it pulls up all of your medical records, even if you've never submitted it to the DMV. No telling what other records it pulls up on people.

It's not just the government now that can get just about any info.they want. This in itself is scary.

Starting in 2009 if you have no Real-ID compliant drivers license you will need to have a passport to fly DOMESTICALLY within the US. You will also not be allowed to enter any Federal building.

You also will not be able to open a bank account, get a job, etc.
So much for being able to buy or sell...
KY was the first state to get one, or one of the first. I didn't even realize I was issued one of these when I got my new driver's license. But the e.r. required me to give them my driver's license in order to be seen and they scanned it right in front of me and my medical history came up on the screen. The dr treated me nice until he saw my medical history and then started in about my medical history. I wasn't even shown what they saw. I was kind of weirded out by it, but had a head injury so wasn't totally processing things very well.
I don't know how DMV got all my medical records, nor do I know if they're even accurate because they don't let you see them.
