Hi,
I'm hoping doing this is ok w/ the mods and that ya'll will help. Most of us dont know what real roughing it is. Some of us dont have alot of room to stock up on foods, etc, some dont have alot of money and some don't have alot of time to go and research it. I'd like to start a list of items, food and otherwise, that would be considered absolute staples that we should purchase. And if the item has more than one use, please list the uses beside the item.
I'm not real sure on what exactly would be the staples we would need should we have to fend for ourselves.... but I'll start with an obvious one to get the list going! Thanks for all your input. I'm going to learn here hopefully!:)

Actually it would be hard to ever stockpile enough drinking water. You would be better off to get a good filtration system so that you could clean whatever water you could collect.
Also, there is a great thread in AG with pages and pages of stockpiling tips and links.

I was just trying to get a simple list started. So I thought of a simple item. I honestly dont have the time to read all the threads and research this. So I thought others wouldn't mind sharing information this way. Maybe I was wrong.

Actually I think that would be helpful too. I honestly don't have the time to go through the pages of survival tips to glean info, but I do try to when I can.
I would say a first aid kit should be up there on the list as well. Peroxide, alcohol, bandages, antibiotic ointment, wraps, aspirin or motrin, that sort of thing. :hat

Those plastic jugs of drinking water don't take long to expire. Way before they expire the water will absorb so much plastic that it tastes like plastic. Also, the standing water jugs after months, begin to leak and decompress. I found out because every year I stock up for hurricanes.
See, I have that too to deal with. Stocking up for hurricanes. My hubby and I were saying, "Oh, just great. The peak of hurricane season (Sept), the collapse of our economy, possible war, and close to election time... all at once." Oy vey!!!

There is an unbelievably long thread about this in Anything Goes.
That said, I am going to start a pantry in my basement this week.
Anything and everything canned. And, I plan to write to date purchased on top of each can with a felt marker. Canned meat, fish, spaghetti sauce, juices, etc.
There was a news segment last night about people hoarding food. :panic
Don't forget to make sure you have an old fashioned hand operated can opener - just in case!

don't forget spices... think about eating rice without s&p...
I am also thinking if it gets real bad spices could be a good bartaring tool.

Sorry! :hug I wasn't trying to come off smart-elicky! It's just that anyone that would want to take the time for it, there is some really great info there. I didn't know if you knew or not.
Okay, first aid supplies a must. I've been trying to store up alcohol and peroxide. Lots of band aids and bandages.
Packages of Kool-Aid. If you have to collect rain water and then sterilize it, it could tast pretty flat. Flavoring would be nice!
Flour, sugar, corn meal, salts and seasonings.
