I recently talked with someone who's Bible Study group is doing "Storying". They read a passage from the Bible, then retell it in their own words. Then they discuss it. Does anyone have any information on studying the Word in this way?

I believe this is a method used by Missions for those without the written Word. What do you think about this as a Bible study method for small groups?

This sounds like the "issue" of contextualizing.

This has been a a huge recent discussion among theologians with those in the Emergent Church especially pushing this.

When man takes God's word and alters it greatly to suit the situation and culture it MAY become a humanistic message; so watered down it appeals to men, yet the veracity of God's Word becomes obscure. It becomes an adaptation of the message to fit worldview. If people like what we say, then maybe this will make them like Jesus. This may forward an insecurity in the Word of God.

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God Rms. 10:17

The Bible; from the Mouth of the Almighty, is sufficient, perfect today as it has been yesterday, and will be forever.

Thanks Sing4Him! This church does embrace some emergent concepts and has participated in doing a church wide Purpose Driven Life study as well as Warren's Community study.

"Storying" was new to me and I appreciate your comments. I always appreciate the information you put on the board. We left that church two years ago, but have many friends still there and I'm concerned for them.

This sounds like the "issue" of contextualizing. That seems like the main issue to me.

Restating Scripture in your own words isnt necessarily bad. In fact, it can be a useful way to get a handle on what can sometimes be obscure (to us now) cultural references.

That being said, its important to not remove the original context from the equation. Things were said by certain people at certain times in certain places to certain audiences for a reason.

Because it starts to venture into "imagining" and "visualizing" things that are never stated in scripture - Chuck Swindoll does this all the time and it infuriates me. He is off his rocker but I still have his program on in the morning while I am getting ready but not because I like it. :doh
