COLUMBIA, S.C. - Cogon grass can seem harmless — even beautiful — but forestry experts in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama warn it's a killer.

The invasive weed already has infested more than 1 million acres nationwide and experts say the Southeast's drought makes the highly flammable intruder more threatening than ever.

Cogon grass, known for its fluffy, silvery white seed heads, has coaxed its way into gardens, forests and highway medians. Control and eradication programs are underway.

my first guess was "it must be kudzu" but apparently this grass can smother even kudzu!:panic

we have a horrible bamboo type of plant around here and liatris that escaped ornamental gardens. they are both wetland plants, so controling them is next to impossible because any herbicide used on them will end up in the water....

Bamboo is so pretty and Asiatic looking but sharp as a razor when touched. Dh won't let me employ it in my Oriental garden. If it takes a lot of water, it would probably die any way with my luck.:doh
