I went to 4 different stores tonight, B.J's, Walmart, Publix and Albertson's and all 4 stores were out of large bags of rice. There were a few 10# and several 5# bags, but no 20# or larger bags. I went less than a week ago and all those stores were full of rice! Not only that, but when we bought our rice at B.J's less than a week ago, it was only $10. Today the sign (that was turned around backwards because they were out of it) read that the rice was $13.00. So in less than a week the price rose 30%!!! For the first time it felt really strange and made me glad I had bought the rice beforehand.

My husband just told me that a guy that he works with went to the same oriental market he always goes to, to buy a bag of brown rice. He usually gets a 25# bag for $13.00 and this week it had jumped to $24.00. That is an 85% price jump in a week on brown rice!

i wonder what the price jump difference is between imported rice vs domestically grown brands?

we usually get Bombay (India) basmati rice and it has gone up in price a bit. But the brown rice brand we get- Riviana, out of Texas has not gone up hardly at all- so far.

That's what I was thinking. Since they know people want it, if they really want it they'll pay it. If they don't they will do without.:hat

When I went to the Asian market last week to get rice. (I have to purchase it there because MrP can't have the American "ENRICHED" rice due to reactions)

He said that Jasimine and Basmati are typically grown overseas and they are not shipping very much if any of those 2 brands out. If they are, they prices have jumped. His 20# bag of Jasimine had jumped from $14.95 to $24.95 due to his price increasing as well. (I know he was just getting the rice because his delivery truck had just come.)

i think the news said our rice crops are doing fine, its the other countries that are having a bad harvest... if they are having a harvest at all :(

are we going to export more of the rice grown here for them?
