I have been self employed for about 6 years now and am out of touch with the annual raises corporate and other employees are getting. When I worked in the corporate world we gave, on average, a 4% raise at the annual review to an employee who was doing their job well.
What is happening now? Do you see that changing if energy keeps driving up prices? What I mean by changing, is do you think employer competition will change salaries to employees? If that happens prices will likely have to go up more and the cycle continues. What do you think?

My understanding and observation within my own circle of friends and family is the average is probably close to 4% annually but in reality that is a bit misunderstood in terms of a more accurate picture of how that number is determined.
If you were to take a company like WalMart with all of its employees, you would see the sector of those employees did not actually see that 4% average but WalMart would be considered 1 number representing as a business in terms of its practice.
Then of course you would have another company like an independent Insurance company, that has far fewer employees and they could have used a 6% standard for other reasons, and would be considered again, like WalMart, one company.
The point simply being the ratio of employees getting a raise of 2% vs. 6% could be 10,000:1 when considering the size of the company giving the raise. It also reflects quite a distortion of how many companies are actually even giving annual raises..two factors not being communicated to represent the actual concerns and issues.
Suggesting that the numbers say the country and its citizens are just whining and all is hunkey dory because the national average of an annual raise is even at 4%, if indeed it is, (I don't think it is) paint's a very distorted perspective.
A family member working for Comcast at the installation level recently received a 3% annual raise, and at $36,500.00/yr , that was a 'whopping'
$1,065.00 ( gross) and about $711.00 ( net)..give or take $60.00/mo increase.
That will buy him about 16 more gallons of gas at the pump each month at current rates..:rolleyes..
again another distorted picture of "prosperity" when a lot of factors are actually present and not being presented by this figure to those who may not understand its limitations to convey the info needed to get an accurate view of whats going on in the economy IMHO.:hug

My job is directly tied to the housing market. As you could probably guess, no raise this year.
About half our company has been layed off, so right now I'm just happy to have a job. :)

I'm an accountant for a CPA firm in a small town. It's a great job with great benefits and flexible work hours. I work whatever I need to get the job done and have even brought the kids in on occassion. However, the pay is awful! I get a .50 raise each January. I do get a bonus at the end of tax season, but it's not very big. At least I get one though. I'm just thankful to have the type of job I have. With 3 kids I need to be able to juggle my time and that is more important than the money right now.

I always thought there should be two different raises. Cost of living and merit raises. I guess I am alone out there lol
My company has given a 2.5% raise every year for the past 3 years. That hasn't matched the nations' cost of living once. Last year the cost of living was 3%. I have no idea what it is now. probably 10%
But like COUGDUDE said, I am grateful to have a job considering I was STUPID and bought a car less than a year ago :doh

Well my "horrible" company that I work for gives just about ZIP, NADA, 0!! And we are a computer company!
I have been there for 7 1/2 years and make a whole $1.50 more per hour than I did 7 1/2 years ago!! And I bring home less than I did because of INSURANCE and taxes! I have prayed daily for God to open other doors and they just don't happen. Some people say I am "here" for a reason to bless others. Well you just don't know how evil the management is here. So here I am stuck with no raises. It is just not me either, no one else gets any raises (unless you are a manager)

I was very fortunate and received 10-15% raises each of the last two years, but usually I get about 5-6%. When our insurance premiums don't go up enough in a given year, the money set aside by my school district for insurance premiums gets returned to us in salary. The premiums didn't go up much, obviously.
