On Cnet, they have a list of software that they recommend you put on your computer. I thought I would make my own list, which is a little different then Cnet's.

Download this before anything else
AVG 8.0 Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe)
Spybod S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html)
Ad Aware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5&cdlPid=10837062)
AVG will scan your computer daily, you should scan with Spybot and Ad Aware every week.
Kerio Firewall (http://adrive.com/public/5f33debfff8870966c66fe2247973ae927786f9c92ca7da52d b373617daf4a4d.html)(this is an older version but it still works pretty good)

Web Browser
Mozilla Firefox (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5&cdlPid=10837062)

Office
OpenOffice (http://download.openoffice.org/index.html)
Foxit PDF (http://www.download.com/Foxit-PDF-Reader/3000-2079_4-10313206.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10836621)
PDF Redirect (http://www.download.com/PDF-ReDirect/3000-6675_4-10255233.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10721006)

Photo Editing
The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/downloads/) (Like Photoshop but not quite)

Media
Klite Codec pack (http://www.free-codecs.com/K_lite_codec_pack_download.htm)
VLC Media (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html)

Archives
7 Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/)

CD Burning
ISO Recorder (http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm) (works alongside xp/vista's cd burning utility)

Online Services
Adrive (http://adrive.com/) 50 GB of file storage
Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) photo hosting
Creative Hoster (http://creativehoster.net/) Web Hosting
Google Mail (https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3 Fnsr%3D1%26ui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2) Web mail

I also like Abiword (http://www.abisource.com/), it's a lot lighter and faster than OO Writer or Word, but does pretty much everything you'd want.

Pidgin (http://www.pidgin.im/) is a great IM client that will connect to MSN, GoogleTalk, Yahoo, etc.

Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/), an email package from the people who make Firefox.

Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) a ridiculously full-featured torrent client
Transmission (http://www.transmissionbt.com/index.php) a more streamlined torrent client for Mac or Linux.

Truecrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/) can encrypt whole drives or just a few files. Because there's no point in giving your bank details to the thief who's already stolen your laptop.

I use a lot of online tools like Google Calendar and Google Docs, too.

Make sure you download Bearshare, Limewire and all the other popular P2P apps.

This way you can test out the free AV and Anti-Malware apps... :heh

Google Open Office. It's essentially just like Office 2003, and can even open and edit Office 2003 files! Wonderful program to have. I even have a version that can be run off of a flash memory card or USB memory stick, without having to install anything. It's wonderful.

Everything from Firefox to OpenOffice. And all designed to run off a flash drive. Thats how I use FF and Filezilla at school.
