My youngest daughter Evelyn was born on November 24, 2007. The first thing my husband said when he saw her was "there is something wrong with her eyes"...
December 19 1 a.m.- I noticed her right pupil had a greyish white hue... I looked it up online and found out that my 3 week old daughter had cataracts or cancer.
December 21- Evelyn was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma. A shock to any new mother- how could one so young have cancer? The doctor told me that my daughter had never been able to see... flashback to my husband's first comments in the birthing room
January 2- We were flown to Toronto where she would be treated by the world's specialists on her rare cancer.
January 6- The doctors tell us that she is too little to start the extremely complicated chemo proticol- her kidneys are too young to handle it.
January 7- Emergency surgery to remove her right eye as the tumor choked the blood supply. The doctors fear that the cancer may have spread to her brain.
January 20-March 20- Evelyn went through her chemo, and handled it like a champ. Between chemo courses, the doctors were able to tell us that they are fairly confident that the cancer hadn't spread to her brain. Her tumors in her left eye shrunk enough to expose her optic nerve---
Praise Jesus, my baby can see me.
We are home now, we return to Toronto monthly for checkups as the tumors will continue to grow until her eye stops growing.
I have never met so many people who have stories that are so incredible in my time at the SickKids hospital and Ronald McDonald House...
Thank you lord for my family.
Thank you lord for my girls.
I can't begin to express how thankful I am-
I just continue to praise Him- we're getting through this. I never thought it would be possible, but it is.
My daughter is the biggest gift I have ever received. She has changed the lives of so many.
Things are not easy on multiple levels in our life, but I have a new perspective now... one day at a time. Jesus is with us always, we just need to remember to reach.
My simple daily prayer:
Dear Lord, I love you. Help us get through today. Amen.
Maranatha!
